Bluewater prepares for
second textile pickup
HURON PARK - Judging by the
nearly 62,0(0 pounds of textiles
collected by the Bluewater Re-
cycling Association last fall during
Waste Reduction Week, its May 26
- June 6 pickup is hound. to he suc-

From Oct. 31 to Nov. I5, the
BRA, in conjunction with Goodwill
industries. picked up an estimated
one and a half pounds of clothes.
accessories, outerwear and foot-
wear per household along with its
regular blue box collection from
member municipalities throughout
Huron. Middlesex, Perth. Lambton,
Dresden and Kent counties.
Now the association is working
with the Salvation Army as well.
Both organizations have the capac-

them to other outlets and make the

For example. clothes may he made
into rags or sold overseas.
"Overall, the quality was better
than what (Goodwill) got in their
drop-off boxes," claims BRA Spe-

Yamamoto -Chapman; adding items

get wet or vandalized.
"I got at least a dozen calls from
people wanting .(textile pickup) in
the ..spring." she said, pointing out
the hulk of the• fall collection came
from rural municipalities that lack
drop-off locations.
The idea, which was first es-

handle all the material and -that
there would he no extra demands,
on BRA staff.
If all goes well with the up-
coming- textile pickup, said Yama-
moto -Chapman. it will take place
every spring and fall. The pickup is

to BRA's service to lakeshore com-
munities.
BRA requires residents to iden-
tify recyclable textiles by tying
socks around the necks of hags or
clearly labelling them . "textiles
only." According to Yamamoto -
Chapman, there were no- problems
with this method of packaging dur-
ing the fall collection.
Because the association is work-
ing with social service • industries
and promoting the recycling of
items that _would otherwise end up
in the landfill, she claims people
feel good about the system.
