Horticultural Society in Hensall
-"And yes, . we did actually have a
daffodil cake contributed to our
refreshment table - mmm,
delicious"
Hello Editor:
and a big THANK YOU for publishing our
Kress release last month - for the Hensall and Dis-
trict Horticultural Society, that is. -
No doubt, you thus contributed greatly to the very
od attendance a, our March meeting. Thirty-six
Members, including nine new ones, turned out. At a
membership of 71 that was excellent. Everyone ap-
peared to really enjoy the show tips Marjorie Phil-
lips shared, i.e, did you know that flowers stay fresh
longer if you immerse the stem ends in steaming
water after cutting.
And yes, we did actually have a daffodil cake
contributed to our refreshment table - mmm, deli-
cious.
The May 12th meeting was under the theme of
"TULIPS".'Anyone got any interesting recipes in-
volving tulips? In contrast to the poisonous daffodil,
the tulip 'itself is actually edible. According to an
article published last August in the Focus, there's
such a dish as "Stuffed whole tulip blossoms".
Perhaps some of your readers could help us out. If
i had the recipe, 1 might even be tempted to give it a
shot and prepare a tray of it for our meeting - if it's
not too complicated, that is.
We are gearing up to plant our town gardens. Big
plans we've got! Well, big for our little group any-
how. Some drastic changes we hope to Make, too.
At our last meeting we passed out a 'discussion
paper' and asked attendees to take it home, study it,
talk about it with family, friends, and neighbors,
then bring thcir ideas hack to us.,
Along with the ideas we are also looking for vol-
unteers to dig, cultivate, plant, water, weed, move -
shrubs, even help build a raised bed, etc. Those resi-
dents who either can't find the time to get involved
or are physically unable to help' out any longer,
might just want to help us with a plant or two from
their own gardens. For example, many area gardens
have well established 'hostas' . We are in need of
two of a small blue leafed variety, two medium
greens, and two large variegated ones. ,i
One or more beds are targeted for perennials; iw
keeping with our 'heritage village' image. Thus we
would welcome creeping phlox in any Colour. Also
lilies, especially the Hardy Perennial kind, would be
most welcome, as would be flowering shrubs, such
as weigelia, lilacs, spircas, etc.
Anyone who wishes to make any sort of contrihu-
tuion to the please call either me at 262-3431, Liz or
Janeth Sangster at 262-2715 or Ann Overweel at
236-7529. •
If you are unable to enlist community support be-
fore May 12, perhaps you could do so before plant-
ing has to start in earnest. We'd certainly appreciate
any help you could give us.

Hensall and District Horticultural Society

SlQ-pitch memorial tournament to be held
This tournament is being orga-
nized to commemorate Brian Hill,
Neal Atchison, Mark Webster and
Pam King...
Dear Editor:
1 am writing this letter to inform the corninunity
of the upcoming H.A.W.K. (Hill -Atchison -Webster -
King) First Annual Memorial SIo-pitch Tournament
which is being held May 30-31, at the Clinton Are-
na.
This tournament is being organized to commemo-
rate Brian Hill, Neal Atchison, Mark Webster and
Pam King.whodied suddenly in a car accident on
November 24, 1996 near Varna. The organization
of this annual Memorial slo-pitch tournament is just
one way to remember our dear friends as well as to
provide an opportunity to give money to the A.H.K.
(Atchison -Hill -King) Memorial Scholarship Fund
and thc Stratford Chef School in memory of Mark
Webster.
The tournament will involve a maximum of 16
co-ed teams who may register by calling Lesley
Dalzell at 482-3196, Chris McGregot at 48L-7539,
Mary Ellen at 482-7919. Registration of your team
must be paid in full by cheque or cash (cheques may
be post-dated until June 2). if you are registering by
cheque please make cheques payable to H.A.W.K.
Memorial Fund. A full registration package will be
given to the team captain upon registration. We, the
H.A.W.K. committee, are anticipating registration
to fill quickly so get your team and money together
as soon as possible.
The tournament will begin Friday night at the
Clinton Arena ball diamonds and will finish on Sat-
urday night around 8 p.m. There will also be a pig
roast being held at Johnymores starting at 4:30 p.m.
to 7:30 p.m. The dinner is open to the entire com-
munity as well as ball players who will get a ticket
for thc dinner when they sign up for the tournament.
This is a great opportunity for those who do not
wish to participate in the tournament to become in-
volved with donating to both memorial funds. Din-
ner tickets cost $8 for adults and $5 for children un-
der 12 years of age. You may purchase tickets by
calling Lesley 482-3196, Chris McGregor at 482-
7539 or Mary Ellen at 482-7919. Once again we arc
anticipating a large crowd so you may want to get
your tickets early.
Finally, there will be a dance held at Jonnymores
on Saturday night in Clinton starting at 9 p.m. Tick-
ets will be available at the door as .well as calling
Chris. Lesley and Mary Ellen. The cost of the tick-
ets is $5 or a donation. We hope that this tourna-
ment is met with great success so that this may be
an annual event. We have had a number of sponsors
donate many things and without thc help of the com-
munity could not have organized the tournament. If
you wish to be a sponsor for the tournament please
contact Mary Ellen, Chris or Lesley at the numbers
mentioned above.
We appreciate all the .interest and help that has
been given to us in these early stages of planning
and hope that thc H.A.W.K. tournament will be mct
with great success.
Sincerely,
Lesley Dalzell
and the H.A.W.K. committee
