Board develops policy
By Heather Mir
T -A Reporter
CLINTON - At its Monday meeting, the Huron County Board of Educa-
tion passed a policy developed by an ad hoc committee to address con-
cerns the board may be competing with local business in its ongoing ef-
forts to raise money for schools. I
The committee was formed after a controversy -developed last November
when the private sector learned the board had created a "virtual computer
store" and was offering computers for sale to parents of students in the
Huron public system.
"There is no intent to compete in markets currently being served by the
private sector where a competitive advantage exists as a result of the util-,
ization of public funds, resources. infrastructure or tax related ad-
vantages," states the policy.
As for computer sales, this activity would require specific approval by
the board, although corporations established for funding special projects
will remain at arms -length from the board.
"We would not want to be involved in that activity (computer sales),"
explained Director Paul Carroll. adding. "It would require action of the
board."
Authority regarding the sale of computers or similar activities is limited
to the trustees and the intent is open to their interpretation. •
Carroll explained to the board. schools are frequently approached by the
private sector for profit-sharing. Students in the schools are a somewhat
captive audience and there is a long history of working.with the business
for mutual benefit. He added the policy discussion regrettably focused on
a narrow sector. "Any venture like that is going to be looked at with the ut-
most caution," concluded Carroll. •
Capsule Comments
with Ernie Miatello
There is much talk about bacteria becoming re-
sistant to today's antibiotics. One reason for
this is that people don't finish all their antibio-
tic prescriptions. Stopping when you "feel bet-
ter" is not a good idea. Finish all the medication prescribed and help
prevent bacterial res•stance.
Cigar -smoking is on the increase... especially among women. Cigar
smoke contains three' times more Carbon monoxide than cigarette
smoke. At also increases the risk of oral cancer by four to ten times.
Like'cigarette-smoking, cigars also increase the risk of heart disease
and lung cancer.
We 'all know we should brush our teeth after every meal but we often
don't achieve this noble goal. At the very least, rinse your mouth out
with water after eating. This will neutralize the acids remaining in the
mouth after eating and also reduce oral bacteria bout 30%.
Give yourself lots of time to refill prescriptions. Sometimes, pharma-
cists have to have a prescription approved before filling and this can
take time. Don't let your medications runout.
