Weapons seminar
enhances study
in martial arts
EXETER. - Hundreds of. years .
ago, peasants in feudal Japan
learned to use simple farming tools'
as weapons' for self-defense and de-
veloped it to an art form that is ;till
taught today. - '•
Karate instructors Dan Bell and
Lance Andeijson. from' Kim's Ka -
.rate in Clinton . staged a apcctal
weapons. seminar for their students
on Wednesday at the Exeter Le-
gion. - ;
Although weapons training is not
considered a practical form iif•self-
defense .birth :instructors agree
learning how to master the use Of a
traditional Japanese weapon is an
extension. of the martial art they
teach:
. "Learning how to control a weap
on .requires- the same respect. dis:
• cipline and care as learning to kick.
' A weapon is dust an extension of
the body.- said Anderson. adding it
. also works into sparring and grap-
piing technique.- .
Using :t how. a si.0-foot: long
"wooden_ staff and a combo. a small-
er hand-held 'rod. Bell and Ander-
on showed how a piece .of wood
could he transtormedinto a weapon
used to fend off one or more op-
ponents. .
Bell said what -they learn in the
dojo (classroom) -is never used on
%the street. but the tocus:and tech-
niqueone requires to handle a
weapon can he applied to everyday
lite. adding that a. weapons session
is a treat for his students who find
the training fun.
"My students can't get enough of
n. It enhances the sport overall.- he
said
Sense! Dan Bell shows his students Billy Taylor and Ktys-
tat Stanley the proper way to use a combo. a martial arts
