win tournament
EXETER - Lashed by a cold:rain
and gusty winds the South Huron
District High School senior hoys
soccer team went undefeated in
five games to win their home tour-
nament on Saturday.
South Huron blanked F. E. Ma- ,
dill 1-0, St. David's from Waterloo
1-0 and East Elgin from Aylmer 2-
0 with goals from Chad GilllIlan,
Chris Rcaburn Dave Farquhar and
Trevor Boersma in pool play:
They met Godcrich in the semi-
finals and the. Panthers wasted no
time scoring a picturesque goal af-
ter Geoff Mauer headed in a well
placed cross from Luke -Sims.
Godcrich scored before the half
was over -but despite dominating
thc second half; South Huron -
couldn't score the go-ahead .goal
forcing thc game into a penalty
kick 'situation. -
South Huron's goalkeeper carne
up with a spectacular diving save
on Goderich's fifth kick to earn the
win launching the thc Panthers into
•the finals against Port Elgin. •
Gilfillan and Farquhar: scorcd for
South Huron in the championship
game giving the host team a 2-0
victory and tournament bragging
rights.
- Even though AAA schools from..
London did not participate in the •
tournament coach George McEwan
said it was a good experience for
the team and the win will be a mo-
tivational boost when the Panthers
continue league play.
Last Wednesday, South Huron
defeated F.E. Madill 4-1 in regular
league action.
Vicngxay Inthavong scored the
• winning goal in the first half after
the ball popped loose in front of
thc net and Inthavong lunged for-
ward putting a head on the hall for
the re -direction.
' Rcaburn, Gilfillan and Bill Kline
accounted for the other three goals.
Junior boys
The junior hoys soccer team also
competed in the tournament.
The Panthers finished second in
pool play, and then advanced to the
finals by defeating a strong team
from John Paul ll, however. South
Huron lost in the finals to Ursalinc
College in a shoot-out.
Coach Bill Shore said every
member of the team contributed to
an all-out team effort.
On April 30 the junior boys team
staged two comebacks against F.E.
Madill scoring in thc dicing min-
utcs of play to record a 3-2 win.
Despite being down by a goal at
the end of thc first half. the Pan-
thcrsfought hack on goals by Peter
Fragiskatos, Rob Acton and Chad
Monteith who scored the winner.
On April 28, the junior boys ex- .
plodcd for three goals in the second
half to defeat Godcrich 3-0.
Peter Fragiskatos had one goal
while Chad Monteith scorcd two.
South Huron goal keepers Aaron
Beattie and Rob DcVries shared
the shut -out.
Shore credits the team's defence
for holding Goderich to a total of
eight•shots.
