EXETER - In keeping with current competitive
employment times, Jim Workman
realizes, "it's harder and harder to
get jobs.
That's why hebecame
involved as organizer of
Crossroads '97 Career Expo at
South Huron District High
School last Wednesday.
"We thought we would like to
promote career awareness," he explained,
adding it's one attempt to broaden the job focus of students.
The first of its kind at SHDHS, the expo featured 22 career
displays and 41 presentations. It was the main project for the
school's World of Work and Community College program, of
which Workman is a team leader. The program was initiated
last September after school departments were replaced by
team leaders.

Workman considers the expo,
which included displays of co-
operative students, (those who take
on job placements as part of their
educational requirements) an
opportunity to teach career options
as part of the school curriculum. •

were a few cancellations to deal with, Workman was pleased
with the turnout.
"It's been overwhelming...the number of people (who)
have come to participate," he said, adding half of the,
displays were of local businesses and organizations.
Included was information on the Stratford Festival,
Canadian Armed Forces, colleges and banks. Presentations
held in classrooms featured careers in farming, massage
therapy, ice sculpting and television.
The expo was of benefit to presenters as well as students.
One display participant noted the event presented an
excellent opportunity to advertise and recruit volunteers for
her business.
