South Huron soccer
teams undefeated
Backed by experienced coaches the senior
girls and boys soccer teams continue to
dominate league play for another season.
• WEST ELGIN - The South Huron District High School senior girls
soccer team narrowly missed winning their first pennant on Saturday
when they were defeated 2-1 by Medway in the consolation final of the
West Elgin Tournament.
In the first game the Panthers beat Arthur Voaden from St. Thomas 3-
1 with goals coming from Helen Theophilopoulos, Hayley Snell and
Lori Richardson. Meagan Ratz and Cara Gardner scored both goals in
South Huron's victory over Catholic Central in game two and Ratz net-
ted the only goal when the Panthers shut out Oakridge 1-0 in the third
match.
Despite outplaying their opponents in regulation time, South Huron
lost the fourth game to St. Mikes in a shoot out.
"The team played excellent soccer and sent a strong message out to
other teams that South Huron shall he competitive this year," said coach-
es Jim Workman and Rob Peat.
On Thursday, the Panthers travelled to Goderich where a 4-0 win
strengthened their stranglehold on the league.
The Vikings couldn't stop South Huron's offensive prowess as Missy
Hayter, Amy Edwards, Gardner and Theophilopoulos scored to extend
the team's undefeated streak in league play to five wins. The Panthers
have scored 20 goals for but have yet to be scored upon due toa strong
defence and stellar goaltending.
South Huron will travel to Wingham on Thursday. They played Sea -
forth on Tuesday, however, results were not available by press time. .
. Senior boys soccer •
After playing Goderich to a 1-1 tie in the first half, the South Huron
District High School senior boys soccer team shook off the cobwebs
scoring three goals in the second to clinch a 4-1 win over the Vikings on
Monday.
"The Panthers were lazy and overconfident in the first half, hut they
came to life for the final 40 minutes," said coach George McEwan cred-
iting the Goderich goalkeeper for a playing a fine game despite poor

Champs honored
The Exeter Lions A.E. Midget hockey team were rec-
ognized at an Exeter Council meeting last Tuesday for win-
ning their All -Ontario Championship series on March 29. All
of the players, coaching staff, trainers and management
were awarded town plaques. Mayor Ben Hoogenboom, far
right, poses with, from left, assistant coach Randy Gilfilan,
team captain Michael Wilhelm and head coach Darryl
McKay. Their accomplishment was the first of two provincial
titles as The Exeter Juvenile Chiefs followed the midgets by
winning their All -Ontario Championship series one week lat-
er.
