. GRAND BEND - Drag racing
fans will get a different perspective
on the sport as -Grand Bend Mo-
torplex. will Tight -up the track and
• hold races during the evenings this
summer.
A 81,000 watt track lighting sys-
• tem will permit Motorplex to move .
its Thunder Series 'and Super Pro'
Comp Series to Saturday nights and
hold a beginners. night, with an un -
limit( test and tune . practice on
Friday evenings.
Track manager, Kris Bedardsaid
the switch is more spectator friend-
ly as night racing appeals:to those
who want to spend their days pur-
suing other activities in Grand
Bend. -
"On a'nice day people want -to go
to the beach or they're out shop-
ping, but at night they're looking
• for entertainment," said Bedard.
"We want to make: Saturday a "big
race night under the lights."
. This is only' one -of the many-.
changes Motorplex has undergone
• since it officially opened thetrack
three years ago: Every year owners-
have
wnershave added snore -programs such as
Junior Dragsters, Asphalt -Sled rac-
ing -and the Micro -Speedway which
continues to .be. popular among:
young racing enthusiasts. .
New for this season is a Pontiac
Weekend on June 8 featuring the -
return of drag racing legend Arnie
"Farmer" Beswick, after 30 -years
and a Fordtastic Weekend on June
1 -featuring animal Jim's "Lethal
Lincoln" which does seven seconds
.down the quarter -mile track. •
Every long weekend the complex
will host its big shows with.Jet Ve-
hicles, ' wheelstanders, monster
. meets and -the Nother's All-Star
Bracket Series along with a special
draw featuring a Hot . Street _Car*
Shootout with four classes pre-
. miering the fastest street cars in the
world: Pro street stars and top cars
• from Canada and the United States •
such- as Mike Moran who ran a
street legal . car in 6.96 seconds' at .
201 inph in one-quarter mile last
year during The •U.S•Nationals will
make appearances. The first one is
scheduled for May 18. .
A major change occurred over
the winter • when Motorplex
switched from being a sanctioned
NHRA (National Hot Rod Associa-
tion) to become members of the
1HRA • (International Hot Rod As-
sociation). The• change will _give
Motorplex national event status
whichallows track -officials to host
bigger events such as Top Fuel Car
racing, Under NHRA rules vehicles
can not exceed a 305 m.p.h. speed
limit, unlike the IHRA which does
not have a set speed limit.
"It's a new race program that's
expanding - rapidly." -said Bedard
Adding Motorplex is the only IHRA
sanctioned -track in Canada. "They
care -about racers, they look after
smaller tracks and we want to be a
part of that."
