Keeping with tradition individual awards were not handed out, in- stead the organization honored each :team highlighting key accomplish- ments for all nine squads. "Ringette is a team sport and eve- rybody put out a team effort," ex- plained president Julie Ritchie add- ing each player received a plaque for participating. Speaking to a full house, Ritchie reviewed the year. The Bunnies won gold in the Walkerton tournament in De- cember, the Novice Red won silver at the Re- gionals in March and gold in Exeter's home tournament. ' The Novice White were bronze finalists representing Huron -Perth "Jr side at the Re- 'gionals and placed third among 12 teams at Huron -Perth. The Petite "C" won silver at Hu- ron -Perth. The Petite "A"'won gold " It lik much when was a dang fr t "C", the Petite "A" , the Juniors and the Belles regrouped from a slow start to become league con- tenders by the end of the season. After recording only one win in two tournaments, the Tween "C" team suddenly swept the Richmond Hill Tournament winning gold, placed second at H -P and made it to the Westem Regionals in Kitch- ener. ' The Petite "C" team went most of the season withqut a win but they improved steadily getting more shots on net with every game eventually win- ning silver at Huron - Perth putting the num- ber two, ranked team out of the playoffs. Both the Junior and the Belle teams also had a lackluster season opener but turned things around to win unprecedented back-to- back gold' medals at Huron -Perth' and the Regionals. "When . it came down ,to the crunch those teams really came to- gether," said director/coach Mi- chele 'Hodgert. "It i-chele'Hodgert.-"It seems like they played much better when there was a medal dangling in front of them." Hodgert said the late success aping the older teams will give lite' girls more incentive to keep work- ing when the chips' are down and motivate the younger girls by showing them there is a place to play when they finish playing at the minor level. During the speeches; treasurer Marion Snow reported that despite more than $2,000 in extra dona- tions, most of which came from the Exeter Optimists, fun4,aising was down by $7,000 this year. She said the organization's expenses totalled $50,545 this year and in order to keep registration costs down, next year's Board of Directors will have to concentrate on fundraising. Joan Morgan, who was voted in as president of the Exeter and Dis- trict Ringette Association for 1997- 98 said she will make funding a top priority. "If we want to hold on to' the kids we got we have to find new ways to raise funds. That's our biggest chal- lenge right now," said Morgan. seems e they layed better there medal lin , in bnt of hem!' The Juniors and the Belles also had very successful seasons with both teams winning Huroh-Perth and clinching gold at the Regionals. This year the organization had to divide the Novice, Petite and Tween levels .into two different squads with; an "A" team and a "C". team with much more success than anticipated. "We had a lot 'more girls at those age levels so we split them at, the beginning of the season but we didn't know how it was going to work out," said Ritchie. "I was Pleased with all the teams, no one was blown away and they were very competitive." r The 1996-97 season also pro- duced a number of "Cinderella team stories" as the Exeter Twcen Oit. , ti Junior - Back, Shauna Koehler, Laura Skinner, Sarah Hodge; middle, Bruce Hodge, assistant coach, Erin Traquair, Lindsay Regier, Catherine Bergmann, Amy Hodgert, Leroy Edwards, coach; front, Kim Keller, Julie Godbolt, Alicia Lawrence.
