Rugby season underway
/Justin Krziyzik & Judd Desjardine
If you've been readjng the sports pages, you'll know that South
Huron's rugby season is underway. But what is rugby?
A rugby team consists of fifteen players on the field, eight forwards
and seven backs. The forward's jobs are to ruck, mall, line-out and to
scrum down. The backs are the ones who do most of the running of the
ball. They also help the forwards if necessary.
When a learn scores, it is called a try. To score a try, you must run
.into the end zone and place the ball on the ground. This is worth five
points. A conversion is a field goal and it is worth two points. Senior
girls' player Carrie Iltman says, "Rugby is a game that uses many
skills, so the best teams will have a variety of athletes who excel in
different areas."
So far this season, the senior boys have a record of two wins and no
losses in Huron -Perth play, and three losses in exhibition play.
The girls have started their season with a tie against St. Marys, and a
loss against Madill.
This year, South Huron was fortunate enough to add a third team to
the program this year: the midget boys. They lost their first game, but a
good effort was put forth by all players.
