EXETER - The Exeter Hawks or-
ganization held an awards banquet
on Friday to recognize their out-
standing players for the 1996-97
Junior "D" season. The gathering
also doubled as a forum for many
playersto say their good-byes. ,
Sean McCann, Chris Kennedy,
Nathan Burns, Greg Goodwin, Der-
ek Kints and team captain Jason
McBride will not return next year.
Some of these players spent five
years with the Hawks and saying
good-bye didn't come easy.
"It was a great honor being a cap-
tain. I'm very proud to walk away
knowing I gave it my all," said a
tearfg1,.,McBride during his speech.
McBride thankd the many team
supporters and credited the coach-
ing staff of Dave Revington, Jeff
Dalrymple and Barry Baynham for.,
their patience.
"Coaching must have been frus-
trating. especially when we came
out flat in one game and hyped in
the' next game. You guys passed on
a lot of knowledge to us." he said..
McBride also credited trainers,
Wayne Dickens, Mike Soldan and
John Miller for keeping the team
together physically and mentally.
"We're the first ones to,complain
and you're the first ones to hear. it.
But with a smile and a wink you
helped get us through."
Getting through the 1996-97/sea-
son wasn't easy for Exeter.
After winning the OHA All -
Ontario Championship last year,
the Hawks burst out of the gates in
September and quickly rose to first
place in their division where they
remained for the rest of the season.
But. injuries and a delayed lay-off
in their schedule contributed to a
down -slide that Exeter never did re-
cover from.
Off to WOSSA. SHDHS badminton players qualified for

urn.
South Huron badminton
players qualify for W.O.S.S.A.
WINGHAM - The South Huron
District High School badminton
team will send six players to com-
pete at WOSSA after a successful
meet in Wingham last week.
The junior team finished second
overall at the Huron -Perth Cham-
pionships on Thursday after Paul
Gregus placed second in the boys
singles. The junior boys doubles
team of Nathan Zimmerman and
Ryan Morrison also finished sec-
ond as did the girls doubles team
consisting of Jamie R,aburn and
Jen Regier.
In the seniors division. Lisa
McDonald placed third in girls
singles and also qualified for
WOSSA.
Coach Pat Rowe said the sen-
iors competition was very tough
this year as Chris Straw, who typ-
ically does well in Huron -Perth,
ended up fifth place.
The juniors will compete on
April 29, and McDonald will
compete in her WOSSA event to-
day (Wednesday).
After beating Mitchell in the first
round of the playoffs, the defending
Jr "D" Champions were eliminated
by Seaforth in six games.
"Until January we were the best
team and' after that we weren't,"
said head coach Dave Revington.
"If we had a 'most injured award'
we would have had 10 guys tie for
first...but the fact is the re-
sponsibility falls on my Shoulders."
Despite their early demise in he,
playoffs, Exeter had a stdccessful
regular season marking 23 wins
with only eight losses and two ties,
placing first in the Morenz division
with 58 points. Exeter also had six
players in the top 12 scoring list.
President, Tom McCann said the
club will undergo a re -building
phase on. and off' the ice as there
will be a/large turnover among the/
executives and assistant coach Jeff
Dalrymple is taking a year off from
coaching.

Long -tithe supporters, Karen and
Wayne Dickins will also retire
from the organization as will Jl hn
Pryde, Barb Dalrymple, Hill
Hodge, Dan Meidinger Mind Al and,
Monica Keys.
McCann thanked the behind -the -
scene workers such as Elizabeth
Kerslake for working the admission'
booth when everyone was watching
the game, Andy Freiter for his ded-
ication as a tithe keeper 'and Dr.
Darryl' McCann for providing the
music' Exeter fans enjoyed at home,
games.
"We had a successful year at the
gate, we were well sponsored and
there's no doubt we had the biggest
follouling," added McCann, paying
tribute to the large number of fans
who supported them on the road. .
"We might not have won it, but
there are a lit of other teams who
wish they were where we are now."
Fury missing
coach and goalie
.EXETER Without a coach or a goaltender, the Exeter Fury mens soc-
cer club is facing quite a dilemma this season. ,
The Fury start their second division schedule in the Western Ontario
Soccer League on May 3 and team members are scrambling trying to find
a head coach and a goalie before their first game.
Jeff Playfoot coached the team last year. but couldn't return because of
work commitments. The vocal and sometimes flamboyant Playfoot ran a
tight, disciplined team and the Fury will miss that this year.
"He ran practices well and he got the guys. in shape," said player Jason
McFalls. "It's nice to have someone there to make the substitutions dur-
ing games."
In the past the Fury went two years
without a coach and team members
shared the responsibilities, however,
that posed a difficult situation when it
came to disciplining players.
"Guys wouldn't show up for practice.
Normally a coach would bench them
but how do you bench yourself?" said
McFalls.
A more serious problem though
is the void between the goal posts.
Craig Winbow, will not return to
mind the net for the upcoming season and McFalls said there is a shortage
of experienced goalies.
"If we have enough players we can get by without a coach but the guy
in net has to know what he's doing or you're done."
Last year the Fury had a 5-8-3 win/loss/tie record and McFalls said the
team will have to recruit a coach and netminder if they want to improve
last year's statistics.
"We have a lot of bodies," he said. adding they have 15 players re-
turning from last year's squad. "We just can't fill the two most important
positions."

Aggressive rucking fives
senior rugby team an edge
EXETER - The South Huron District senior boys rugby team won its
last two games beating St. Marys 27-14 on April 15, and skunking F.E.
Madill 15-0 two days later. •
Bryan Jeremy led the Panthers with some strong kicking scoring two
tries including one off a 75 meter. run. Jeremy Janke also recorded a try
and played a strong game in the line-outs.
Coach Terry O'Rourke named Jason 'Neil as "man of the match" for his
"all around, brilliant play." He also scored a try.
O'Rourke credited the win to good hall possession. aggressive rucking
and line-out play.
This was also the winning combination in the game against F.E. Madill
as consistent ball possession resulted in good continuity of play.
Deyan Zgvc, Jeremy Pickering and Jason Philips scored one try each
'and Steve Bell, Aaron Svater and Jason Neil played well as forwards.
Bryan Jesney and Jason Hartman had a strong game as backs.
Team captain Steve Bell said the senior's running game is improving be-
cause good rucking is giving them more possession time.
"We've improved at getting to the hall and getting it out to the backs
who have been providing good support," said Bell.
However, the midget boys and the girls rugby teams did not do as well
as. the seniors. ;
The midgets lost 26-0 to Madill and the girls tied St. Marys in a score-
less game before losing to Madill 25-0.
Unlike the seniors, O'Rourke said a lack of experience is affecting both
teams on the field and it will take some work to develop their game.
"The /seniors in particular are starting to show the skills as well as their
knowledge of the game. That's where the midget boys and the girls are
;lacking," he said.
Jeremy Van Esbroeck goes up for a line -in during a senior
boys Rugby game hosted by South Huron High Shool. Be-
hind him is Chris McCann and Deyan Zgvc. The senior
boys rugby team defeated St. Marys and F.E. Madill last
week.
