EXETER - As C- nadians celebrated National Volunteer
Week from April 13 to 19, many area organizations
recognized the efforts of volunteers who play an important
role in their communities.
Huron District Scouting held an honors and awards
dinner recently to recognize long service to the youth
organizatiA wind-up dinner and dance was also held to
thank voluifor their work in making Hay Township
150th anniversary activities a success. Money raised from
year-long activities will be re -invested in the community. In
Middlesex County, VON HOMME program volunteers were
honored with a lunch and thanked for their efforts in
allowing elderly people to remain in their homes.
These examples are only a drop in the bucket in terms of
the number of volunteers who make it possible for youth to
benefit from organized sports, elderly residents to remain
independent, and the disadvantaged to get a hand up.
"I am proud of the many ways that volunteers across our
county are helping to strengthen and build our
communities," said Huron MPP Helen'Johns in a recent
Volunteer Week press release. "Voluntarism takes many
forms - whether it is spending a few hours a week reading to
young children in the school; answering the phone at a crisis
centre or helping seniors with their income tax forms - the
list just goes on and on."
Johns stated the provincial government has committed to
establishing a Voluntary Sector Round Table to bring •
together government and voluntary sector representatives.
She added her government recognizes the voluntary sector
is as essential tohealthy communities as are the private and
public sectors. •
The province is initiating a tive-year program to
strengthen the voluntary sector, promote voluntarism
among Ontarians and recognize outstanding volunteers.
The first three initiatives of the Volunteer Linkages
prngtanr include a public awareness program, a partnership
to use technology to support the -voluntary sector through
community-based networks .and a new program to honor .
outstanding volunteers. A new youth volunteering award
program will also be established in Ontario schools.
According to statistical data from StatsCanada, Canadians
say the main reasons they volunteer include: a willingness to
help others, a desire to help a cause they believe in and the 0
need to accomplish something. worthwhile.•
The same source reveals volunteers in Canada gine more
than 1 billion hours of their time each year. In Ontario,
nearly 2 million volunteers contribute appmximately 350
million hours annually, which works out to an estimated 181)
hours a year for each volunteer. Although women are more
likely than men to volunteer, on average men donate more
hours of -.vork than women.
