Tinker Tots holding family dinner
There will be enter-
tainment and activities
at the April 25 dinner.

HENSALL - The Hensall and
District Horticultural Society met at
the Hensall United Church, April
I4. There was a good representa-
tion from the surrounding commu-
nities and the Society gained sever-
al new members.
The speaker for the evening was
Marjorie Phillips, Seaforth, who de-
livered an informative presentation
on "Preparing For Your Flower
Show". The theme flower . for the
• evening was thc daffodil. with Pam
Hall as team captain.
• Hazel Corbett read a poem about
- • daffodils, and the refreshments and
door prizes also related to daffodils:
- Doris Jantzi was the winner of a
free registration to the District 8 an-
- nu -al meeting.. The next meeting of
the Hensall and District Horticultu-
ral Society. will he May 12. This
will also bc.ihc Spring Flower Auc-
tii,n and the theme flower will be
the tulip.
On April 9. Zone Commander
• (lord De Jong, his Deputy Zone_
Commander June Pyctte • and her-
. husband District Seniors Chairman -
F.d Pyettc • visited the Hensall
• Branch of the Legion. Nominations
and elections were -.held. Installa-
tions will he held on May 23 jointly
when Blyth Branch visits the Re-
m. On April 9 a successful Sen-
ors Spring Tea was held at the
Branch hosted by some members.
On April 12 a Solo tournament
was held at the Branch hosted by
some of thc members. There was a
good -response from the communi-
ty. April 14 will mark the 50th an-,
niversary of Hensall" Legion Branch
168: Sam Dougall was the first
president of the newly -formed
Branch, W.O. Goodwin was Secre-
tary treasurer and Doe Kyle was
the Sgt. at Arms. During the
1950's, 60's and early 70's '-the
Branch had 86 veterans as mem-
bers. Today they have 18 veterans.
They hope to celebrate their 50
years of service to•the community
during Legion Week in September
1997.
Brittany Pilgrim ' of Hensall
placed second. in story -telling• at
area level in Etobicoke on April
20. Zone C-1 is proud of the effort
put forth by ithe students this past
year. Best wishes go to Charlotte
Worsell of Auburn as she placed
first at area level in Etobicoke and
advanced to the Provincial level in
Elliot Lake on May 3.
The regular meeting of the
•Branch will be held May 21 at 8
p.m:
Eighty years have.•passed since
the Battle of Vimy Ridge. On East-
er Monday, April 9, 1917, in less
than eight hours. the four divisions
of the Canadian Corps captured
most" of the ridge in the most star-
tling Allied success thus far in al-
most three•years of bloody fighting
on the Western Front. The Canadi-
an attack on the ridge was a *mas-
terpiece of careful training, prepar-
anon and precise planning. More -
than . 10,000 Canadians " were
wounded and about 5,000 Canadi-
ans dead, but the -victory is cele-
brated
as a national coming of age.

Hensall residents are getting
ready for Hensall's Annual til-;
lage-wide yard sale. The/event is .
scheduled for. May 31;: The day be-
gins with -the Firemen's Breakfast
at the Hensall Fire- Hall on Queen
Street. There will he sales on every
street; and many special attractions
and food booths. ' •
Dreaming it out
South Huron District High Shool students will perform
"Listen to the Wind," a play by James Reaney, Canadian
playwright and award winning poet on May 1 and 2 at the
SHDHS small gymnasium. Director, Glenda Burrell said
there are approximately 40 students participating in the
melodrama including a 14 member chorus.- The melodrama
is about imagination and dreaming out creativity. Curtains
rise at 7 p.m and tickets are $5.

ty had their annual
meeting last Thursday
evening.

SIIIPKA - On April 5, a family
dinner was held to celebrate Lorne
Fenner's 80th birthday at his home.
'Inose attending were Kenneth and
Evelyn Nicholson of Courttight,
Leona Moore of Sarnia, • Audrey
and Ken Westman and Jamie, Kar-
en and Sonja Guenther Green, all
of London, Colleen and Dale Daw-
son of Arva, Barry Wessman,
Springfield.and Mabel Fraser, Ship-
ka.
Mabel Fraser attended the funeral
of her brother-in-law, Clyde Nich-
olson of Courtrighl, at Steadman
Bros. Memorial Chapel, Brigden,
on April 1 and then remained for a
few days with her sister, Evelyn
Nicholson. '
Congratulations to Earl and June
` Rader on the birth of their third
grandchild, when a baby girl Rosa-
lynn; was born in April to their son
.David and Julie Rader. of the Siin-
coe area.
On April 16. Ken and Mary Bak-
er helped celebrate 'the 92nd birth-
day of Emma Schilbe, • Zurich,
along with other members of •her
family, having lunch at Erb's res-
taurant and later at her home for
birthday cake and ice cream. •
Hugh and Annie Morenz visited
a -day last week and were dinner
guests with her sister. Mary and
Art Finlayson at Seaforth.
The Shipka Community mem-
bers met Thursday evening, April
17 for their annual meeting.
On Friday , evening Ken and
Marg Baker, attended the wedding
dinner for their grandson, Mark
Lawson, and his bride, Vicki
Poole, of St. Marys, at Damen's,
with the reception at the St. Marys
arena. •
The Bakers recently visited
Ken's brother Earl, at Terrace
Lodge, Aylmer.
