Senior Citizens of Ontario
(U.S.C.O.) Spring Rally, held
Thursday at the Zurich Community
Centre.
The bi-annual meeting gives
members from Huron, Northwest
Middlesex and Northwest Lambton
counties an opportunity to update
one another on club activities. Dur-
ing an afternoon meeting and
lunch, each of 22 area club repre-
sentatives gave a three-minute pres-
entation.
"We arc seniors working for sen-
iors," explained Zone 8 President
Louise Hayter, adding the 'group
helps seniors recognize their ca-
pabilities and the role they play in
their communities.
Two representatives from each
zone in Ontario will attend an an-
nual convention to be held this Au-
gust in Brampton. The convention
provides representatives with an
opportunity to vote on resolutions
that will in turn be presented to the
provincial government.
This year Zone 8 will put forward
a resolution concerning Bill C-91,
passed by the previous federal gov-
ernment, regarding the length of
time drug companies are protected
before generic brands are de-
veloped.
"It is our opinion if they cut
down on the amount of protection
time... there would be money avail-
able to keep hospitals open," said
Past President Ron Dann, who rep-
resents Grand Bend, home of the
zone's largest club.
The resolution also supports a na-
tional strategy for medication in-
cluding a national drug insurance
plan and cheaper generic drugs as
well as high quality, safe drugs. It
also asks for changes that would
make the drug approval process
safe and publicly -accountable.
