Eight-year-old Brittany Pilgrim, a Grade 3 student at Hen-
sall Public School, won first place in the Legion District C
public speaking contest on April 6 in Chesley. She compet-
ed with four students in the story -telling category with 'Jil-
lian Jiggs to the Rescue.' "She t'as trying to catch a mon-
ster and it turned out to be a kitten," explained Pilgrim,
who `advJticns` to Area Level in Etobicoke on April 20. .

Blyth Festival chooses
artistic director for '98
BLYI'H - The Blyth Festival has
chosen award-winning playwright
and dramaturg Anne Chislett as the
Artistic Director Designate to sue,
coed Janet Antos for the 1998 sea-
son.
The choice was made by the
Board of Directors'un April 6. fol-
lowing a four-month search that in-
cluded 25 candidates.
Chislett has served as a drama-
turg - coaching playwrights as they
prepare their scripts = for the Festi-
val under the leadership of Janet
Amos for the past two years. In that
capacity. she worked with first-
time London playwright Nora
Harding, whose play "This Year.
Next Year" was a hit in the 1995
season. She has•also served an in-
ternship in dramaturgy at the Banff
Playwrights Centre and Canadian
Stage in Toronto. She has taught
play writing with the University of
Western Ontario's Faculty of Part -
Time and Continuing Studies
(1995) and in various courses for -
Theatre Ontario.
As a playwright, Chislett has re-
ceived two Chalmers 'Canadian
Play Awards, the most recent in
1996 for "Flippin' In", a play for
young audiences, prodlced by
Young People's Theatre in 1995.
She won the Chalmers Award in
1982 and the Governor General's
Award for Drama in 1983 for
"Quiet in the Land". which is re-
turning to Blyth as part of the 1997
Festival season.
Her plays. including "Quiet in the
Land," "Yankee Notions" and "The
Tomorrow Box," have been pro-
duced by many- theatres in Canada
and abroad. A Japanese production
of "The Tomorrow Box" received
the "best production" award in Hi-
roshima in 1989. She has also writ-
ten for radio and film.
Chislett has a long association
with Blyth, being one of the found-
ers of the Festival in 1975 and
ing many of her most successful
plays premiered there. She will take
up her duties in June. working un-
der Amos throughout the summer
season before taking ovcr.the Artis-
tic Director's post in November.
"I will do my very hest to fostcr
the creation of new plays that will
delight, entertain and touch the
hearts of the Blyth Festival's audi-
ence." said Chislett.
