Family travels from
Long Beach to Ontario
to buy pup
FULLARTON - A local dog
breeder gained international rec-
ognition when a family travelled
from Long Beach, California last
Friday to purchase their first Gold-
en Retriever pup.
Jim Peys and his children Car-
. olyn and Chris came to Southern.
Ontario as a result of a nine month
search for what Jim describes as the
Most important purchase he will
ever make. The search ended when
the Peys discovered Seg -Mar Ken-
nels, a well-established breeder of a
British line of sporting golden's.
Jim was directed to the Wettlauf-
er's kennels through. a fellow
•breeder, Vivian Muller, who has a
site on the World Wide Web. Jing
and his daughter ti'arolyia used the
Internet' to research what breed of
dog would hest suit the family.
Seg -Mar is currently setting up its
own Homepage and Melissa Wett-
-laufer used E-mail to talk hack and
forth with the Peys in California.
A 10 --year veteran breeder, Me-
lissa• took over the business from
her father. who operated the ken-
nels in the Stratford area for more
than 30 .years. The bloodline has
been proven both in field and obe-
dience trials and the Golden's
make excellent family pets as well
as working dogs. Some have been
selected to he trained as special
needs dogs for the physically chal-
lenged and the deaf.
Melissa says her Goldens are
well suited to family life because of
their loyalty, adaptability and an
eagerness to please. As a sensitive
and social animal. Goldics find
their place as genuine family mem-
hers.
"You just can't help it," says Me-
lissa of the close relationship that
develops. "They become part of
the family."
People with all types of lifestyles
find Golden Retrievers to be good
pets. The Peys were looking for
an. intelligent dog that likes chil-
dren and could keep up with their
veru active lifestyle. With the
adorable 12 -week old puppy in
their arms, it was clear to see the
California family had found their
perfect match with Casper.
' Melissa: and husband Glen will ,
miss the pup and each of his eight -
brothers and sisters as they do with
each litter. Still, with eight adult
dogs and four remaining puppies,
they have their hands full.
In addition io each managing a
busy full-time career, the Wettfauf-
ers also find time to make their
own maple syrup and keep horses .
