At a previous meeting, Sim- mons was advised he couldn't bar the press from a public meeting of council; he said he would have the editor cicort- ed from the meeting by the police it necessary.. Simmons was asking editor Bill Batten for an apology for having re- vealed that council met in se- cret session to make• their de- cisiun on moving the .police out of the town hall. That situ- ation failed to. materialize as the T -A editor .was on -holi- days for 'the meeting which was chaired by Simmons. • , The reeve did ask reporter Ross Haugh if he had an apol- ogy. When he said he did not, Simmons said he may ask him. to !cave the meeting. Council- ' for Barb Bell overheard the discussion and suggested council -not get involved in that type of situation. „ At Monday's meeting when Batteii was asked to leave by mayor Bruce Shaw, he re- plied, "it will be my pleasure. It will be more • enlightening than this." 35 YEARS AGO April 7, 1962 - Al Scholl, owner of Al's Super Save Mar- ket in Hensall has purchased the Silco store in order to en- large his facilities. Postmaster Harvey C. Pfaff of. town has beers' named emer- gency measures co-ordinator for the Exeter arca. Plans are being made for the visit to West Middlesex this week by Prime Minister Dic- fenhaker and Mrs. Diefenhak- er. Lee Learn was grand cham- pion at the Exeter men's curl- ing club this week when he skipped his first draw winner to victories over the other two draw champions. • Tenders arc being called this week for construction of the million -dollar -plus addition to Clinton Collegiate which will serve as Huron's vocational school. 40 YEARS AGO April 8, 1957 - Eric Hey- wood has sold his residence on Albert Street to Mr. Homer Dobbs of Biddulph Township who gets possession. May 31. A new home being construct- ed by Lionel Kendrick on Wellington Street collapsed during the heavy windstorm Wednesday night. The two-storey frame house of Gerald Isaac, R.R. 1, Clandeboye was completely destroyed by fire Saturday morning. The senior girls basketball team of SHDHS won the Per- thex championship and the tro- phy donated by J.W. Weber. Exeter. 50 YEARS AGO April 8, 1947 - Mr. John J. Cornish who two years ago purchased the Harding resi- dence on Main Street has dis- posed of it to Mr. Frank King of Stephen Township. E.R. Hopper was elected "a director of the Western Ontario District Funeral Service Asso- ciation at a meeting in,London, Friday. 75 YEARS AGO April 8, 1922 -Work has commenced on the excavation of the basement for the new Methodist Church in Crediton. This district was visited with a downpour of rain during Monday night. Several cellars were flooded in town. The store has been officially open since December. Proprietor Rob Thompson, former reeve of Paisley, was involved with a family fur- niture business there before moving to Hensall under an agreement to locate his new store at least 50 kilo- metres away. "Paisley was the friendly vil- lage," he• said. "In Hensall. the slo- gan is living and working. togeth- er...f love the integrity of the people. According to Thompson, the friendly atmosphere of small town living makes it easier to do busi- ness. Although he enjoys working with people, claiming "it's fun," he ad- mits the greatest challenge he faces is "getting.people to Hensall."
