Michael McCain, president,and chief executive offi- cer of Maple Leaf Foods talked about the North American consu- mer at.the March 26 Outlook '97 at the South Huron Rec Centre spon- sored by the Hensall District :Co - Operative. McCain started out by saying his. company has a tremendousrela- tionship with Hensall Co-op and then added, "You have . to get to know 'your customer. It's like Wayne-Gretzky who.. not only knows where the puck is; but where it is going." In answer to his own question 'of what drives consumers in North America, McCain said,"There are three '. significant things. They are nutrition and health, convenience. value and getting older." -In the nutrition and health catego- ry, the customer wants to know if the product is good for me and my family. Dealing" with convenience McCain said, " Surveys show 51 pe rcent of every dollar spent on food is done so -outside the home. We have a wholenew generation grow ing up, who not only don't want to cook, but don't know how." He talked about the baby boom- ers who in the 25 t� 35 age bracket were big spenders. Now those aged from 45 to 50 years have a whole new focus. They are now big savers and want value for their money. - To answer consumer trends, Ma-. ple Leaf have introduced 100 per cent all meat weiners with no fillers or preservatives.. McCain• added.
