Hensall Co-op's Outlook '97 draws top quality spea! :ers
• By Ross Haugh
T -A Reporter
EXETER. - . Michael McCain,
president,and chief executive offi-
cer of Maple Leaf Foods talked
about the North American consu-
mer at.the March 26 Outlook '97 at
the South Huron Rec Centre spon-
sored by the Hensall District :Co -
Operative.
McCain started out by saying his.
company has a tremendousrela-
tionship with Hensall Co-op and
then added, "You have . to get to
know 'your customer. It's like
Wayne-Gretzky who.. not only
knows where the puck is; but where
it is going."
In answer to his own question 'of
what drives consumers in North
America, McCain said,"There are
three '. significant things. They are
nutrition and health, convenience.
value and getting older."
-In the nutrition and health catego-
ry, the customer wants to know if
the product is good for me and my
family. Dealing" with convenience
McCain said, " Surveys show 51 pe
rcent of every dollar spent on food
is done so -outside the home. We
have a wholenew generation grow
ing up, who not only don't want to
cook, but don't know how."
He talked about the baby boom-
ers who in the 25 t 35 age bracket
were big spenders. Now those aged
from 45 to 50 years have a whole
new focus. They are now big savers
and want value for their money.
- To answer consumer trends, Ma-.
ple Leaf have introduced 100 per
cent all meat weiners with no fillers
or preservatives.. McCain• added.
"Zip -lock 'packaging addresses the
convenience needs. Our -Lean 'n'

will be • a large increase in white
bean acreage in Manitoba this year.
In 1997 Ontario will only have in-
fluence on 10 percent of the North
American supply. We've gone from
large voluble to partnership with
several leading farm processors."
The bean manager went on to
say, "The Japan market for edible
beans should improve greatly in the
next five years. In that country 70
per cent of the farms are only of
one hectare size. With improved
standard of living in China their ex-
port business to Japan will be less
because of domestic use. The Chi-
nese people are learning about nu-.
trition and .diet and by the year
2000, Japan can't rely only on Chi- •
na for exports of beans." '
Pryde concluded , "With North
American production of beans"
moving west, we are under the gun
to maintain quality, have less input
costs and come up with increase in
yields." •

will be • a large increase in white
bean acreage in Manitoba this year.
In 1997 Ontario will only have in-
fluence on 10 percent of the North
American supply. We've gone from
large voluble to partnership with
several leading farm processors."
The bean manager went on to
say, "The Japan market for edible
beans should improve greatly in the
next five years. In that country 70
per cent of the farms are only of
one hectare size. With improved
standard of living in China their ex-
port business to Japan will be less
because of domestic use. The Chi-
nese people are learning about nu-.
trition and .diet and by the year
2000, Japan can't rely only on Chi- •
na for exports of beans." '
Pryde concluded , "With North
American production of beans"
moving west, we are under the gun
to maintain quality, have less input
costs and come up with increase in
yields." •
