He and his father Wayne recently switdhed to the vacyum pump and pipeline method of -collect- - ing sap making it easier to collect the 40 gallons of sap it takes to make one gallon of pure maple syrup. Vacuum system .changes the way maple sap is collected "By Chris Skalkos T -A Reporter - EXETER = The vacuum pump pipe -line system used among maple. syrup producers is not a new con- cept, but it's new to the Tuckeys. who have been collecting sap with: buckets for four generations. Last year, Peter Tuckcy and his father Wayne switched to the •vacu um system after using buckets to collect the sap from the maple trees in their sugar hush located just north of Exeter:off Highway 4. Before they converted, they had to carry and pour 750 buckets of raw sap by hand in order to pro, duce maple syrup in -the boiler. "It Was all Dad and I could do. just to handle it," recalled` Peter "h used to keep. us husy." Today, they have 900 taps drain- . ing sap into a <webof •thin clear plastic "gathering lines" criss- .:rossing . the property. A motor - driven pump located on.the lowest cornet of the wood lot literally - sucks the sap out of the trees and caries it through the maze of tubes where it drains into a drop inlet running underground that eventual- ly pumps it into a large storage con- tainer before sending to the evap- orator. • -We still use 30 buckets..." said Peter pointing to a number of metal buckets hanging from the trees closest to the sugar shanty "...but we use them .as a gauge. When we see the sap starting .to drip that's when we turn the pump on." Because maple sap is 98 per cent water and two per cent sugar it takes about 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of maple syrup. It's no wonder Peter finds the ne.w system helpful. Without the need for "palling" there is more time to cut wood and keep an eye on the wood -fired boiler to make sure it doesn't run dry and cook the sap. According to Peter, the vacuum system is also more productive but not because he can tap more trees. "They say the pipelines yield 10 per cent more sap and I agree," said Peter adding it is pumping 150 gal- lons of sap per day. The technology behind the new design is simple and Peter likens it to a milking machine, however, there is still work involved as the lines have to be taken down and flushed clean every year, and then erected, with the help of a few di- agrams, again next season. But the vacuum system has made maple syrup production easier for him and his father, and Peter can't help but wonder what his forefathers, . who have tapped the bush for the last 80 Seniors Games organized DASHWOOD - The Dashwood Seniors met March 17 at the Com- munity Hall and sat down to a pot- luck dinner with 37 members present and one visitor. A playoff for Solo is planned for March 19 and 26, and a euchre playoff March 25 and April 1 at the Dashwood Din- ers. Any non-member 55 years and older are welcome to the playoffs. The next meeting is 7:30 p.m., April 21 at the Dashwood Hall with lunch provided. All seniors are wel- come. The remainder of the afternoon was spent with eight tables of cards and socializing.
