March 23, 1987 -Although
th vera vernal equinox marking the official
beginning of spring 1987 occu ed at 10:52 p.m. on March 20, the
sap started flowing in area sugar bushes a month earlier.
Wayne Tuckey is carrying on a five -generation tradition of mak-
ing delicious maple syrup in the Tuckey sugar bush northwest of
Exeter. He started carrying sap to the evaporator about three weeks
ago and has produced 56 gallons of syrup so far.
The 1986-87 season of the Exeter Mohawks ended abruptly as
they suffered three straight defeats at the hands of the Tavistock
Braves:
The Exeter Broncos won the 'A' championship of the recent atom
hockey tournament in Port Stanley. In the four games of the series,
Joel Campbell scored 14 goals for the Broncos and Darren Kints
was outstanding in goal.
The champion pen of steers at Saturday's show and sale at the
Denfield Livestock Sales Ltd. was purchased by Jim Darling of Dar-
ling's IGA of Exeter.
20 YEARS AGO
March 24, 1977 - Exeter council decided Monday night to inform
all persons who'have not yet hooked up to the town sewer system
that it must be done in the,very near future.
Garnet Hicks, a member of the Exeter Independent Order of Odd -
fellows for more than 47 years received a special honor, Saturday
night. It was the Meritorious Jewel for his many contributions to the
Lodge, Church and Community.
35 YEARS AGO
March 24, 1962 - The Hotel Imperial at Grand Bend Was filled to
capacity Saturday night to witness the debut of "The Four Coach-
men", four Exeter musicians. They are Bob Fletcher, Bob Russell,
Don Taylor and Bill Batten.
H.H.G. Strang of Usborne has been named chief officer of the
Ausable Authority.
Town council agreed to establish this year the tree planting pro-
gram proposed by the PUC. Approximately 15 trees will be planted
annually.
40 YEARS AGO ,
March 25, 1957 - Surgical services at South Huron Hospital will
he extended by May 1, the board of directors announced at the annu-
al meeting of the association Tuesday 'night. The board also an-
nounced plans for construction of a nurses' residence and a wing in
• the near future.
An oil drilling outfit moved onto the farm of 'Wally Wein on.
Highway 83, justeast of Dashvilood and drilling operations have be-
gun.
Margaret Sanders became the fourth t3iteter Girl Guide to win her
Gold Cord, the highest award of the organization when it was pre-
sented to her Thursday night at a mother and daughter banquet. •
50 YEARS AGO
March 24. 1947 Huron Lumber Co. has started an excavation 'for
a modern building on their property that will display the many lines
of building materials now on the market.
About 225 pounds of butter valued a $1,00 were stolen from the
Lucan Creamery early Sunday morning.
,William H. Golding, Liberal member for Huron -Perth, was ap-
pointeddeputy-chairman of committees of the House of Commons.
Mr. Clinton Sweet of Usborne held a successful auction sale of his
farm implements on Monday. He had 60 head of cattle which netted
hint about $5,000.
75 YEARS AGO
March 25, 1922 -`The Lucan junior hockey team came up on Sat-•
urday to play a friendly game with,the Exeter junior team. The ice
was soft, but the game was a`good exhibition. The locals were too"
fast for the visitors; the score resulting 10 to four in favor of the-
home •team.
The YPCA staged a successful five pin bowling tournament this
week. The winning team comprised G.E. Wethey, T. Elliott, W.
Law ;on and T.O. Southcott. Second were Rev. M.H, Wilson, W.W.
Taman, Lyle Statham 'and W.S. Cole. _
80 YEARS AGO
March 22, 1912 - Mr. Fred Preeter of Dashwood, has purchased a
,seven -passenger car from Mr. Wes Snell of Exeter.
The Crediton News reports, "Now,since Dashwood and Zurich are
putting in hydro what is wrong with our people getting together and
asking for an efitimate' of the cost for the village of Crediton."

forward to
busy 1997
BOSANQUT - "If the number of information inquiries received
so far this winter are an indication of the '97 season, this will be a •
great year at Pinery," notes Park Superintendent Les Kobayashi in a
recent press release.

ervations are expected to he processed during the first week of April.
Park service improtements include the installation :' of ..a 113 •

kilometre cycling trial, an expanded host/hostess'program, emer-
gency phone and•campground referral systems;.and additional elec-
trically serviced sites. In May, the 6 -kilometre Rotary bike trial from
the park gate to Grand Bend will be completed..
Natural history discovery programs on the park's. agenda include:
swan viewing in Iate.March, a butterfly survey in late June. a Rum
and Spirits Adventure walk, guided hikes and canoe oetings in July
and August, fall colors and a deerrut weekend in November, and
November,
for coyotes, hooting for owls. and camping in winter.
