By Ross Haugh from the archives of the Exeter Times Advocate 10 YEARS AGO March 18, 1987 - Alice Koehler who has been at the Centralia vil- lage Post Office for nine years mostly as Postmaster is taking over a similar position at Huron Park. A number of former ministers were in attendance at Sunday's 25th anniversary celebration at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Exeter. Returning were Rev. Wallace Stephenson, Rev. Ivor Bodenham, Rev. Harold Thyne and Rev. Mark Lowry. • Rev. Stan Desjardine , a Grand Bend area native has returned af- ter an absence of 25 years to become minister of the Church of God, the church he attended as a youth. 20 YEARS AGO March a 1977 - The 70th anniversary of Tieman's Hardware and Furniture sure in Dashwood is being celebrated this month with a gigantic ogre wide sale which continues until the weekend. The buirness was estahlished on February 2, 1907 by the late Da- vid Tiernan. His son Mervyn joined the firm in 1924 when he fin- ished high school in Exeter -at the age of 18 and still operates the business. - The vehicle used for delivery of coal and other hardware merchan- dise from 1917 to 1939 was a Model T Ford purchased from Milo Snell of Exeter in 1917 for $513. 30 YEARS AGO March 16, 1967 - OPP Constable Bill Glassford was one of the area's first. maple syrup "producers" to get into business with the coming of favorable weather. He tapped' seven trees around his home beside Riverview Park and has bottled four quarts of syrup. Principal Douglas Palmer's resignation was tendered to the hoard at SHDHS Tuesday night. It was effective immediately. Vice- principal Joe Wooden was named principal and teacher Bruce Shaw was named an executive assistant. Don Southcott, former editor of thc T -A has been appointed an ex- ecutive assistant to provincial treasurer, the Hon. Charles Mac - Naughton. As the result of two meetings this week, it appears certain that the rodeo which has been held in Stephen Township -for the past three years will be moved to Exeter Community Park. All area gas stations are now displaying signs advising motorists they must not smoke within 10 feet of gas pumps and must turn off their vehicle's ignition while fueling up. 40 YEARS AGO March 17, 1957 - A 40 year agreement between the Ausahlc Au- thority and the town of Exeter over the use of water from the pro- posed Morrison Dam in Usborne Township was approvedby town council Monday night. 45 YEARS AGO March 18, 1952 - Robert Nicol recently discharged from the RCN has resumed his position as a linotype operator at the Times Advo- cate. Exeter council authorized the purchase of a new truck for the town to replace the old wartime vehicle now in use. The Airforce Wives Auxiliary has donated a total of $600 to date to the South Huron Hospital. They will have the furnishings of a room named after them. The first step to hire a full-time manager -secretary for the Ausable watershed was taken by the Authority Monday afternoon at their first 1952 meeting at Parkhill. 50 YEARS AGO March 16, 1947 - A permit was granted to Earl Neil by Exeter council to erect a roller skating rink on Carling Street. 55 YEARS AGO March 17, 1947 - Lines are now being erected to provide tele- phone service from the Exeter exchange to the new Royal Air Force Service Flying Training School now being established at Centralia. If sending parcels to a lady overseas include a few hairpins, bobt; pins or safety pins. They arc unbelievably scarce in Britain. And it s said younger ladies might like a lipstick. • 80 YEARS AGO March 16, 1912 - A number from Exeter attended the box social in Shipka Tuesday night. Frank Taylor and Clayton Sinis sang a duet and after the program Frank sold the boxes deriving good pric- es. Boyle and McLeod of Exeter will open up the barber shop in Cen- tralia, Friday ()leach weck. . The Ontario Flax Company has appointed Jos. Davis as foreman of the Exeter Flax Mill. J.H. Holtzmann received a cablegram from his son-in-law Rev. Melville Whiting of Tokyo, Japan, announcing the birth of a son. Art of stencilling to be demonstrated at Centralia Faith Tabernacle - Vikki Elliot will dem- onstrate the art on March 21.... By Mary Peterson Centralia correspondent CENTRALiA - Although we have just experienced some un- pleasant winter weather recently, spring is just around the corner. This marks thc anticipated celebra- tion of Easter in the Christian cal- endar. Easter services Palm Sunday will be held March 23. and thc Sacrament of Commun- ion will be celebrated at Zion West and Centralia United Churches. Regular worship services will be held at 9:45 and 11:30 a.m. Good Friday service will be held March 28 at I 1 a.m. at Zion West United Church. Those people as- sisting with the service are asked to attend a rehearsal on March 27 at 7:30 p.m. On Easter Sunday, March 30, a sunrise service will be held at Zion West at 7 a.m. with a potluck breakfast following. Easter worship services will be held at 9:45 a.m. at Zion West and 11:30 a.m. at Cen- tralia United. UCW Crediton UCW have invited Cen- tralia UCW to their meeting on April 3 at 8 p.m. Stencilling On March 21, Vikki Elliot will demonstrate the art of stencilling at Centralia Faith Tabernacle at 6:45 p.m. Ruth Durand will be the guest speaker. .Breakaway Ladies' Breakaway will be a day of fellowship at Kirkton Communi- ty Centre on April 5. Zion United Church is sponsoring this annual event and have advance tickets available. • An event entitled 'Thc Fine Art of Juggling' is planned for ministry personnel and members of congre- gations from multi -point charges. Beachvillc United Church will host this event on April 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Additional infor- mation is posted on the bulletin board at the church. Talent night Centralia Faith Tabernacle invite everyone to a talent night on March 23 beginning at 7:30 p.m. March for Jesus A 'March for Jesus' will take place on May 31 in Exeter. Mem- bers from local congregations are encouraged to attend an informa- tion meeting on March 24 at 7:30 p.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Exeter. Spring event All interested women arc invited to the Oxford Presbyterial UCW Spring Event at Hickson United Church on May 24, Margaret Hern will speak about her position 'as Rural Life Chairperson of London Conference. if you're interested in attending, call Margaret Hem about possibly sharing the trip. Euchre in Crediton recently, Lone Hand winners in the euchre games were Grace Wurm and Charlie Rollings. Edith Eaton and Wilmer Scott were High Hand winners, while Low Hand winners were Alma and Ar- chie Etherington. Precious Blood School students held their science fair re- cently. Christina Hoggart, pictured at top, and Enid Drum- mond, not present, placed first in grades 4, 5 and 6 for their project on floor cleaners in the Physical/Chemical cat- egory. In middle, Mike Dietrich, placed first in Physical/ Chemical category for grades 7 and 8. His project was on insulation: Pictured above, . Canvassers still to complete door to door campaign GODERICH - The Huron Chap- ter of the Heart and Stroke Founda- tion of Ontario, observed Heart and Stroke month, February, with the annual door to door campaign, but due to inclement weather some of the canvassers have not completed their areas, but hopefully will have them completed shortly. It is ex- pected the Huron Chapter will meet the projected target of $56,000. This is the main fundraiser each year. The Mega Lottery held by the Provincial Chapter, was a huge suc- cess, selling out three weeks early. Approximately 820 tickets were sold in the Huron Chapter area, re- sulting in three winners, $1 million . winner and two $5,000 winners. The funds raised by the lottery will be used entirely for research, as the Foundation has only been able to fund 34 per cent of the funds need- ed for research. The efforts of the Heart & Stroke Foundation is continuous, there- fore, some of the upcoming events are: The mighty 30 -seat Big Bike for Stroke returns to Huron County on June 8, at Seaforth, Recreation Centre, teams of 28 pledging partic- ipants, will ride the 3 -km course, former NHL commentator Pat Han- nigan drives the Big Bike. Also "Fit for Heart" will take place, the same day, with Drusilla Leith of the Recreation Centre coordinating the event. Physiques Aerobics Stu- dio, Exeter, will also hold a Fit for Heart, information can be obtained by calling Angela Lansbergen, 235- 3942. The Big Bike Ride will be conducted in Exeter, date TBA, for further information call 524-4440. The "Jump Rope for Heart" pro- gram in Huron County schools now have 10 schools signed up for this program,. it promotes a Healthy Life Style at an early age.
