•Good nutrition is something we -really have to
work at. It's easy to think we are eating well
but statistics- • show that as a country we
aren't. When we look at all the evider(ce about
food and health, it's fresh fruits • and vegeta-
bles and whole grains that form the backbone
of a healthy diet. Building everything around
them will go a long 'way toward better, long-
term health.
ft's a known fact that for those who do not smoke or drink alcohol ex-
cessively, one personal choice seems to 'influence long-term health
more than any other. And that is whit we eat: •
March is Nutrition Month and a good time to focus on the important
points of a healthy diet. 1) Moderation -not eating too much or too little
of any. one food or nutrient. 2) Variety: consuming a wide variety from
each of the four basic.food groups.aswell, as a variety from -within each
group. 3) Balance: to sensibly combine food Intake and exercise to
avoid weight -gain'.
Canada's Food Guide tells us that a healthy daily diet contains 5-12
servings of grain products.. 5-10:servings of fruit, and. vegetables, 2-4
servings of milk products and• 2-3 servings of. meat and meat alterna-
tives. How does your diet measure up?
