Precision teams
win gold and bronze
ST 'THOMAS - Finally!. -
Alter -winning silver. and bronze.
the Exeter Juvenile Precision Skat-
ing team captured a gold medal at a
competition in St. -Thomas on Sun-
•da'v. • •
°The Mini -Classics had a flawless
routine and were' given perfect
marks across the board after their
first skate launching them into the
gold final. They took to the ice in
their second skate for
a repeat per-
fonnance and were
two points off, from. an-
other perfect mark.
"I was amazed. They
skated . the best
I've ever seen."
said coach Ka-
thy Mcrner add-
ing they were competing
against 23 Icanis. some of
which were from much larger cen-
tres such •as Markham and Mis-
sissauga.
The gold medal round put the
Mini -Classics up against the top
two teams from all flights and their
first set of 'larks made them the
team to heat.
But the girls, most of which arc
under 12, didn't let that break their
concentration. •
"They were excited but they were
focused mentally,",said Merner.
Despite a very successful start a
gold medal has eluded the jusenile
team for most of the season and
Merrier said it was a rewarding.ex-
periencc for the girls.
"Getting to the gold medal finals
was an accomplishment. but actual-
ly winning it was something else."
she said.
The Junior Classics
The Exeter • Junior Pre-
cision Skating team also
competed in St.
Thomas ' winning
their second
bronze medal of the sea-
son:
After narrowly missing the
medal rounds at their last compc`ti-
lion• in Fergus. the Classics re-
deemed themselves on Sunday w tth
two strong performances.
Exeter finished fourth after the
first skate and humped out rt',al
Newmarket in the second skate to
place third. •
. Merner said the race among the
top four teams is very close and
one team keeps getting humped out
of the medal round in competition
"1t was just a matter of which
team wanted it more 'that week-
end. ' she said.
The Juniors have two more com-
petitions this season. one In Water-
loo on March 15. and the other in
Markham. The Juveniles will also
'compete in Waterloo.

Midget 'AE' Lions
advance to semi-finals
EXETER - Atter winning their
first game at home 4-3 in
overtime, the Exeter A.E. Mid-
get Lions travelled to Forest
and won 4-1 on Tuesday and
7-0 on Thursday to sweep the
series.
Tuesday's game was a
close contest until Exeter
broke out and scored two in
the third period. Jeff Gooch
had a strong game in net es-
pecially with a big save just
before the break at the end
of the second period. Goal
scorers were Brock Weiss,
Mike Wilhelm, (with two), and
Jon Campbell. Greg Young,
Lucas Forest and Weiss ham
the assists.
The final game saw a tight
contest in the first period, with
Tony Eagleson playing sharp,
making key saves through-
out, eaming a shutout. Strong
team play and good disci-
pline with just six minutes in
penalties determined the
dominating win.
Mike Wilhelm led the goal
barrage with two while Jon
Campbell, Brock Weiss, Jim
Seaton, Greg Young and Ke-
vin Hogan had singles. Assist-
ing on the goals were Lucas
Forest (2), Ben Cottrell (2),
Weiss, Larry Cole, Ryan Munn,
Seaton and Wilhelm.
With just four goals against
in the series, team play and
,strong goaltending are evi-
dent as the Lions prepare
now to take on Dresden in
the Ontario Semi-finals.
