EXETER - With brightly colored flags flowing above the circling
flag- bearers, the nations of the world came together=in spirit -as 120
- local skaters took, to the ice at the South Huron Recreation Centre on
Sunday: -
The Exeter figure Skating Club held its Carnival, a two and a half
.hour skating extravaganza featuring club skaters of all ages, from
pre -beginners to senior competitors, as well as both precision skat-
ing teams "performing solos and group
numbers.
Around the World was this year's theme
as skaters dressed in ethnic costumes and
"skated 10 popular songs such as "We are .
the World" and "I Like to Teach the World
to Sing." - '
"It was a display of the different cultures
around the World," said Carnival co-
ordinator -club executive Debbie Roy add-
ing it was different from -last year's theme which was- based on -the
• music of the Beatles, and the one two years before that called Elvis
on Ice.
Also different this year were the costumes. _This- year organizers -
decided to rent costumes instead of handing the responsibility over
to the parents..
.. "It was easier on us and They looked really nice," said Roy.
Six- powerful spotlights lit the darkened arena while following the
skaters. through - their routines giving the show a professional at-
- mosphere and the decorations and back drop added color to what
Was already a colorful event.
The first number after the intermission was the highlight of the
show as eight senior skaters included their fathers in a skating rou-
tine -done to the classic tune New York, New York. -
Decked out in black -tuxedos and hockey skates, the dads looked
• comfortable ' on the ice with- their daughters skating gracefully.
around them. This number produced more than a few laughs from
the.capacity audience which couldn't resist but hurl the odd heckle.
"It was a nice way to start off the second half and I think.the dads
hada lot of fun," said Roy. ,
Carnival is the highlight of the club's season with all skaters par-
. ticipating in the carefully choreographed performance.
"It's designed for the kids to have fun and the parents also enjoy it
because they get to see the progress the kids have made throughout
the year."
"It was a

cultures

Exeter skater will compete in Special Olympics
EXETER - Elsie. Kaupert is a
special athlete and this
week she will cotn-
pete in the Special.
Olympics.
Kaupert, .36,
will compete at
the Special Olym-
pic Games in Ot-
tawa from.Thursday
to Saturday " in
solo figure
skating.
She
earned
the
honor af-
ter winning is
silver medal in tate
Kincardine Regionals' in January
which allowed her to compete at
the Provincials where she was se-
lected by a panel of judges to ad-
vance.
This isn't the first time Kaupert
has reached this level in competi-
tion. Four years ago she won a sil-
ver medal at an International com-
petition in Austria and received a
town plaque for her accomplish-
ment.
This year her goal is to win gold,
however, in keeping with the spirit
of the special Olympics, Kaupert
said just being able to compete is a
tremendous accomplishment.
"If I can not win let me be 10th
and brave," she said reciting the
Special Olympic motto. "It's about
participating and learning skills in

the spirit of fellowship," she added.
Kaupert has a developmental dis-
ability and several seizures brought
on by epilepsy left one side of her
body partially paralyzed. But when
she began skating at 16 -years -old
she found it helped and she con-
tinued the on -ice therapy which has
enabled her to regain her strength.
Today, Kaupert skates with con-
fidence and grace executing spirals,
bunny hops and crossovers without
difficulty and last weekend she per-
formed at the Exeter Figure Skating
Club's annual Carnival.
- Kaupert credits her coaches, Patti
Firth and Marlene Webb for de-
veloping her skating skills and be-
stowing her the confidence to go
out and perform in front of a live
audience, something that still
makes her nervous.
"Before I go out on the ice I take
deep breaths to relax and l think
about my routine. It helps when my
coach tells me I'm going to do A -
okay," she said.
Kaupert has come a long way
since she began skating and her
physical accomplishments extend
off the ice as she also competes in
track and field and swimming. But
she admits her number one passion
is figure skating.
"When I started I could hardly
skate and now I'm going to the
Special Olympics," she said. "I've
always dreamed about being a good
figure skater, and now I think my
dream has come true."
