Five get jail terms
in Exeter court
EXETER - In Provincial Court in Exeter on February 25, Judge
R.G.E. Hunter handed out jail terms to five persons, assessed fines
against two others and heard preliminary evidence on two other cases.
one of which will be dealt with in Code -
rich. •
Drinking, driving while prohibited
Mark Morgan of no fixed address was
sent to jail. for 60 days on a drinking and
driving charge and four months to run con-
secutively on a charge of operating a vehi-
cle while prohibited. His licence was sus-
pended for two years.
A vehicle driven by Morgan was stopped by OPP Constable Kern at
4:50 a.m. on December 8, 1996 op sideroad 15-16 in Usborne Town-
ship and was found to have alcotIolic odor on his breath. He admitted
to having six or seven bottles of beer.
At the Exeter OPP detachment breathalizer tests revealed readings of
1.20 and 1.10. • . •
Only 12 days earlier on November 26. Morgan was fined $750 on a
similar charge and lost his driving licence for 12 months which led to
the -latest charge ofgtperating a vehicle while prohibited.'
-Intermittent jail sentence •
Kevin Campbell of R.R. 2, Dashwood was ordered to jail -for 60 days
after pleading guilty to a charge.of operating a motorcycle while his
driving privilwges were disqualified in -addition to being fined S500 for
driving witheut insurance coverage.
At about 8 a.m.-on September 17. 1996, OPP Constable George
Finch received a complaini of a prohibited driver and found the ac-
cused arriving at his.place of employment in Stephen -Township.
Defence lawyer J. O'Donnell said his client was only driving a short
distance from home to.work and doing it only "to help out his wife.".
Campbell lost his licence for twoyears when he was convicted -for
drinking and driving on Aughst26, 1995. The jail term will be served
intermittently from 9 a;m. Saturdays.to 6 p.m. Sundays ()leach week.

Albert Hovius of Hensall pleaded guilty to four of six charges of as-
sault involving his children. Between September 1, 1991• and June 7.
1996 Hovius is alleged to have assaulted his t% a sons and two daugh-
ters by graphing them around the neck, cuffing their heads. kicking
their,buttocks and•slapping their faces. • .
Judge Hunter ordered Hovius to return to coun_on March 25 -for sen-
tencing and resolution of the two other charges.
• Mischief, assault convictions
Judge Hunter assessed two consecutive 30 day jail terms against Jet-
frev Averill of Exeter on.charges of public mischief and assault:
-On the night of August 17. 1996, the accused was observed yelling
and swearing on Exeter's. Main Street and then tearing up planters and
flowers owned by the Exeter Business Association. Damage was esti-
mated at $200.00 • • •
The -alleged assault took -place on September 16 of last year when
Averill•is said to have hit Paul Lovrc and threatened to "kick your teeth
in.' and ",heat you up.'` _
- Fined $1,250 '
Jeremy Stone of Herisall who pleaded guilty at an earligr court ap- •
pearancemas fined a•totatof'$1.250. He will pay $.1.000 on,a Charge of
assault and $250 for a breach of probation.
The conn was told Stone is undergoing anger managenient irediment.
, Drinking, narcotic charges •
Ann Halley of Morns: Township was fined $750 for -drinking and
driving,and $1.00 for possession of a narcotic. At 2:44 a.m. on October 1 1. 1996. Etieter OPP Constable Finch -ob-
served a vehicle travelling in Exeter without a.licence plate. The officer
foupd the accused to be unsteady on her feet and a searchof the vehicle
revealed 13 grams of marijuana. . •

Breathalizer, tests at the Exeter OPP detachment revealed blood alco-
hol readings of 2.20 and 2.30. In addition to the -fines. her driving
ccnce was suspended for 12 months. .
• -Jailed for assault
Joseph Blommaen of Wellingion Street in Exeter was -ordered to jail
for 30'days after pleading guilty hi a charge of assault. • •
Blommaert pleaded guilty to striking a 22 year=old female on the
evening of October 14. 1996. A short time earlier. the accused was '
foundguilty of a similar charge of assault' against his wife. -
Defence counsel David Reid said his client was verwremorseful for
his actions and sayslie did not mean to hit her and has sincc apolo-
gized. Reid added that Blomrnaert was prepared to take anger manage
' rent counselling. . •_ .
Reacting to a defence request.for an iniermittent jail sentence. Judge
Hunter said:" Unless you are working. it's straight times" -
Five month jail term
,A jail term of five months was levied against Paul Erdley of Crumlin
Sideroad on charges of operating a vehicle with an over the limit of al-
cohol in his -system and driving %%title his privileges were disqualified
On August 3. 1996. a. vehicle driven by Erdley almost struck a police
cruiser on Highway 4. just north of Exeter and drove over the curb.
When stopped he had no identification, was unsteady on his feet and
• had slurred speech. •-
At the Exeter OPP detachment. breathalizer readings of 2.2(8 and
2.10 were recorded. The five month jail sentence will run consecutive-
ly to anotherjail sentence now being served for' an earlier conviction.
His driving licence has been suspended for three years.
