Scout and Guide Week. celebrating environmental respect
By Brenda Burke
T -A Reporter
EXETER - The middle of February marks an annual flurry
of activity for local youth who honor Scout and Guide Week.
This year, Certificates of Appreciation were awarded for a
Scouts' December food.drive donation and also to the Exeter
and Area Fire Department for its assistance with the project.
Scouting, the first international environmental movement,
celebrates its 90th birthday and along with Girl Guides,
participated in a Thinking Day Ceremony on Feb. 20,
marking the birthdays of tord and Lady Baden-Powell,
founders of the organizations.
History
In 1907, Baden-Powell began an experimental camp for 22
young people at Brownsea Island, off ti- e southern British
coast. Activities centred around lifesavi.lg, nature and crafts
while badges were earned by passing brief tests. Scouting has
since grown to include 25 million members in more than 216
countries and territories.
The organization continues to focus on environmental
issues through activities such as no -trace camping, which
echoes Baden-Powell's advice on what to leave behind after a
nature excursion: 'Nothing and your thanks.'
He also invented the patrol system, placing importance on
program planning and decision-making. The concept began
when one senior scout was put in charge of a small patrol
within the group. The system has been advanced by
involving youth in modern decision-making at various
levels.
Scouting has welcomed female members almost since it
originated; Baton -Powell asked for the help of his.sister and
later his wife, to develop and organize a mirror organization
for girls.
Local Scouts
Scouts earn badges in four main areas: The Outdoors,
Personal Development, Social Development and Service. The
Challenge Badge system offers an opportunity to work on
specialized skills.
Recent scouting events have included a paper drive, apple
day, carol sing, Christmas tree recycling and Cub Banquet.
Also planned is a March Break camping trip to Haliburton
ar,d community service work at an .upcoming home and
garden show.
Local Girl Guides
Guides work toward badges entitled My Community, My
Outdoor Environment, My Horizons and My Future. There
are also Encountering, Exploring and Discovering Challenges
to be met.
"The girls love to go camping in late spring," notes Cindy
Vander Burgt, a local guide leader, adding the group is
divided into units for trips that include cooking, hiking,
campfires and craft work.
Guides also pay a monthly visit to the Exeter Villa to play
games, sing songs and do crafts. Planned for April are trips to
local recycling and airplane facilities as well as a fire hall for
lessons in fire :safety.
At top, from left, Guides Kristel Westlake. Megan Taylor, Shannon Green, Courtney Alexander and Melissa Davey prepare for
their Thinking Day ceremony last week, which honors birthdays of Guide and Scout founders. At left, Whitney Dawe poses by a
cake made by Bev Prout, which celebrates. the 90th anniversary of Scouts Canada. Above, First Exeter Scouts Group Cominit-
tee Chairperson Ron Dawe, at centre, presents certificates of appreciation to Chief John Morgan, of the Exeter and Area Fire
Department and to Tara Hunking, representing donations from Bill and Marilyn Bengough. The certificates are an expression of
thanks for assistance with a Scouts food drive held in December.
