OPP officer speaks to GB senior citizens GRAND BEND - Bernie Zgavc of the Grand Bend OPP detachment was the guest speaker at Grand Bend. Senior Citizens February 5 meeting. Serving the last few years in Grand Bend gave her the oppor- tunity to meet local people and to appreciate the beauty of this tourist _area. She referred to herself as the 'friendly Sunday morning cop'. Her greatest interest has been the young people who -visit and live in this community. Zgavc discovered •that after -the - hectic pace of the summer months,. the local teenagers had little or nothing to do but roam the streets. There was no place for - them to meet and communicate together. Encouraging local people to orga- nize -and supply a teenage meeting place for interesting -activities, paid off when the empty maintenance shed and -storage building became. available. Local organizations and citizens contributed money. The' - young people cleaned up and paint- ed the building. The community supplied free of charge, furniture, TV, computers, several pool tables and other activity games. The teens meet two evenings each week'and the . public .school children once each week and seniors meet during the day. - Constable Zgavc urged seniors to become involved. She said that,a one-on-one relationship could hind together. a young personand adult to form lasting friendships. "Get to. know the kids on a first name ha 7. sis", she. said. "Share your experi- ences. and. encourage new interests in , hobbies and life time occupa- tions. Talk to the kids. let. them open "up and he a good listener", she added. - - Bob Sharen a big booster of the" project had earlier outlined how the centre was working. "Its .great" he said.
