imperials fastball
team seeks new coach
EXETER - Fred cook has re-
tired from coaching the Exet-
er Imperials fastball team
and if someone doesn't step
forward to take over, fastball
in Exeter will cease to exist.
Cook, who has coached
fastball ih . Exeter for 'more
than 15 years, will hang up
his cap this summer and if Ex-
eter's Junior team wants to
play another season they will
have to find a replacement
coach by the first Week of
March when the Ontario Jun-
ior -Mens Fastball League
holds its first meeting.
So far no one has come for-
ward to fill his shoes, but
Cook feels a few ex -players
would fit the bill if they could
make the time commitment.
Cook coached the Royals, -
a_mens fastball team, for sev-
en seasons and when he quit
coaching three years ago
the team folded. if the same
thing happens to the Juniors,
some of , the players would
have the .opportunity to play
for nearby centres such as St.
Marys and Mitchell, but for
most, it will spell the• end of
their fastball career.
-• "Quite honestly, I don't
think it -(fastball) will be
missed other than by those
who are involved In it," said
Cook.
After serving as the team's
head coach, manager,.
equipment handler, tourna-
ment coordinator and press
correspondent for the Imperi-
als, Cook said it was time to
simplify his life.
"My life has revolved
around fastball and it's time
• to move - on and do other
things," said Cook who plans
. on sharpening his golf skills
and getting out to do some
camping. He said it was frus=
(rating trying to come up.with
the $2,000 it costs torun a
competitive fastball team
and it vets becoming difficult
to stay committed. "I - don't
have the patience I used
to...I guess that's a part of
getting older."
Cook will leave behind him
a winning legacy that will be
hard to mirror.
He coached the Royals to
third place in 1990 during the
Ontario Intermediate Fastball
championships, hosted in Ex-
eter and led the Bantam "C''
to a championship title in
1992. Last season the Imperi-
als finished eight out of 30
teams at the highly com-
petitive Elimination Tourna-
ment hosted by Mitchell.
"We didn't get the recogni-
tion we deserved in that tour-'
nament given the level of
competition we were up
against," said Cook adding it
was the definite highlight of a
_mediocre season.
Cook isn't quick to admit he
will miss coaching, but he's
sure . that will change this
spring.
"When we get a nice sunny
day and I'm not out there
practicing...1'11 miss if," he
said adding he is retiring with
a feeling of accomplishment.
"We hada pretty good run at
fastball In this town."
