Apathetic sports
community denies
coaches recognition
The. Times Advocate, has only received
one reply nominating a volunteer,coach
EXETER - "1 can't believe it. l never thought bur sports com-
munity could be so apathetic," said Chris Skalkos. sports writer'for
• the -Times-Advocate as he Was going through his morning mail.
Skalkos was looking for completed nomination forms, responding
to a ,coaches recognition program conducted by the T -A and spon-
soredhy 3M and the Coaching Association of Canada. The program
is designed 'to honor coaches who go beyond the'call of duty and ex-
emplify an excellence in their coaching performance and phi-
Iosophies. •
A nomination form and a story regarding the program ran in the
spons pages of the T -A on Dec. 23 and for the following three is-
sues.
It's been seven weeks since. the first nomination form appeared.
however, the T -A has only received one nomination to date leaving
Skalkos shakinghis head and wondering why.
"There arc a number of coaches that deserve ,to tx• recognized. 1
can't believe I haven't had a flood of replies." said Skalkos.'"Other
than the one 1 recieved last week. no one has even called to express
any interest in nominating a coach."
The program asks for background information about the coach and
Skalkos suspects people may need some time to gather enough in-
formation. especially if they're trying. to surprise this person.
But with the deadline approaching Skalkos is wondering if he will
receive enough nominations to run the program.
"There are a number of coaches in our community who have done
so much for young athletes and for the sport they coach. They may
not feel comfortable nominating themselves but someone should
take the time to fill one out for them," said Skalkos adding two win-
ners and two runner-ups will receive a gold -toned lapel pin. a formal
certificate and will be recognized in a special feature in the T -A. '
"It's only a small token of appreciation but 1 -think they deserve
it," he said.
