Sunbeams meeting rescheduled
The Sunbeams will hold their
postponed meeting February 13. .

THAMES ROAD - The February meeting of the
Thames Road U.C.W. was held on Monday evening
with 22 women present. The meeting table was deco-
rated with a red plaid tablecloth with a big.red heart;
candles and a red rose for a Valentine setting.
Karen Etherington welcomed everyone and gave
the theme "Valentines and Family Love". She also
gave a reading "Valentine's Day."
Jean Duncan and Etherington read scriptures.
Leona Cottle read "What if Parents Never Met."
Etherington gave a humorous reading "A Little
Bending, A Little Stretching." •
Agnes Bray and Jean Duncan received the offering
and Cottle gave an Offertory Prayer.
Bray had a musical contest. She played a line of .14
love songs and the group were to write down the ti-
ties. The• winner of the contest was Jean Hodgert.
- Etherington-read"If I Had My Life to Live Over.",
Vice president Jean Hodgert conducted the busi-
ness portion of the meeting: Secretary Diane Jeffery
took the roll call and cacti .woman_ answered with her
favorite wedding song.. The minutes and cards , of
thanks were read. Marilyn Pym gave the treasurer's ,
report. Hodgen gavg the Board Of Managers report.
1t was decided to have, a strawberry and ham sup-
per on June 16.
The World Day of Prayer into he held at Bethel
Reformed Chtlrch on Huron St. East on March 7 at 2
p.m.
The group received an invitation to a potluck din-
ner at 12:30 p.m. on April 14 at Caven Presbyterian
Church, Exeter.
'The.rtiee)ing'was closed with the singing of "OPer-
fect Love" and the U.C.W:Prayer.
Group W served,lunch.
Church service
Rev. Jock Tolmay was in charge of the church ser. -
vice on Sunday morning. He told the children an in-
teresting story.
The choir sang "Restore My Soul" accompanied by
organist Jean Hodgen:
. Rev. Tolmay read scripture and .the congregation
read Psalm 121.
The title of the minister's sermonwas"Changed
from Glory unto Glory. - -
Marion Cann and Judith .Parker received the offer-
ing. -
Robert Bray, Kay Cunnington and. Marilyn Van-
denbussche served Communion.
The postponed Sunbeams meeting will he held
February 13 at 930 a.m. at Thames Road.
On February 19 the joint session•meeting at 7 p.rn.
will be followed by the Official Board meeting at 8'
p.m. at Thames Road.
Marwood and Marjorie Prest of Huron Park, Evan
and Edna Sims of Hensall, were Saturday night visi-
tors with Lloyd and Dorothy Knight of Exeter.

The Truck Elimination early bird
draw for '$250. -will be made also'
on that evening. Their 'are truck
tickets still available, The proceeds
will go to'updatc Stanley Township

Canoe Rally :
The. Annual Canoe Rally, will be
'held this year on:April 6. 'More de-

The Stan. Lee Club met at the
Complex on February 4 at 42:30
p.m,.A pot luck lunch was served,
in the Valentine theme.
Charles Reid opened the meeting

poems and readings were read. the
club was informed of changes in
the Constitution in effect from Au
gust '96
Louise Hayter read a letter_ from
the "Voice Magazine" .from the
Honorable Cam Jackson newly ap-
pointed "Minister of Senior . Af-
fairs". He was telling them how he
- is working on- issues pertaining to
them. • •
The afternoon ended with euchre
with winners Yellow high -
Charles Reid, Pink high - Noreen
Hayter, Yellow low - Marg Hayter
and Pink low - Leona McBride.
The next meeting' will be held
Tuesday March 4 at 12:36 with a
pot luck lunch.
Varna Crokinole Club
The Varna Crokinole Club will
be hosting a Crokinole Tournament.

CENTRALIA - On February 5,
the Family Night Program at Cen-
tralia Faith Tabernacle was can-
celled due to the annual congrega-
tional business meeting. Lost and
Found will resume Wednesday, to-
night, at 7:00.
-The women had fellowship on
Friday evening. They enjoyed hot
chocolate, popcorn, testimonies
and a movie. The women meet the
third Friday of the month. The next
meeting is March 21 at 6:45 p.m.
Saturday morning, the men met
at the church for prayer at 6 a.m.
Their next meeting will be'on Feb-
ruary 22.
This Saturday, February 15, the
youth will be going snowtubing
from 2 to 5, weather permitting.
Anyone 18 and over is welcome
at the M.O.R.E. Group get together
at 6 p.m. Saturday for prayer.

Women's Institutes N 100 years old

birthday to you."
Those are the words
that will. be sung
throughout all of Can-.
• ada by thousands of
women on February 19
to celebrate the 100th anniver-
_ sary of the establishment of the
Women's Institutes.
All of the WI's of. Huron South
will be meeting individually to look
at the many accomplishments made
by women all around the world
since a humble beginning in Febru-
ary of 1897. - • .
The WI organization began in
Stoney Creek in Saltfleet Township
in southern ' Ontario after Adelaide
Hoodless lost her 18 -month-old
son, who had died after drinking -
impure milk.,.
Spurred ori by this personal trage-
dy, Mrs. Hoodless had the desire to
see that it never happened again to.
her or -anyone else. She campaigned
to get, housewives organized to
meet on a regular basis to learn
modern methods of caring for their
families.
In early February- of 1897, Mrs.
Hoodless was the guest speaker at
Ladies' Night of the Saltfleet Farm-
ers' Institute and (his spurred Er -
'land and Janet Lee to invite all
women in the area to attend a meet-
ing at Squire's Hall in Stoney
Creek. That was the -night of Febru-
ary 19 and the -first Women's Insti-
tute in the world was established. -
Going -back to the beginning,
Women's Institutes made good im-
pressions on municipal, provincial
and federal governments: One of
the first successes of many WI.

Years was the pasteurizing of milk.
This was followed over the years.
by bagged bread and potatoes.. hot
lunches in schools, clear 'markings
on poison 'containers, painting' of'
white lines on provincial highways

WI members sent packages' of
homemade food, knitted items such
as socks and quilts. Long-time .
members of the area .Institutes tell
us these gift packages from home
were very moth appreciated.
In Huron County WI members
have made tremendous contribu-
tions with a variety of projects,
These include volunteering at nurs--
ing homes and hospitals, sponsor-.
ing 4-H programs, contributing tri
cemeteries, arenas, school play-
grounds' and community. halls.
They' also assist in local fall fairs
and a few .years ago, the Huron
South District installed signs identi-
fying local rural areas.
The big celebration for WI mem-
hers' from around the world will he
held -from June 17 to 22 at the Con-
vention -Centre in Hamilton when
more than 3,000 delegates are ex-
pected to attend. .
Marian 6)ougall and Marilyn
Pym of the Hurondale Institute will
carry the Huron, South_ District ban-
ner at the convention in Hamilton.
Irene Richardson of Oxford North
is in charge of the church service
on' Sunday, June 22. She will be as-
sisted by Hurondale's Marian Dou-
gall and. Roberta Templeman of -the
Staffa branch.
