Firefighters will hit
the ice...literally
EXETER - A.comic event of untold proportions will take place in Hen-
sall on Saturday night. Something funnier than a Yuk Yuk's stand up com-
edy act and more comical than a Harlem Globetrotter's show. •
Members of the Exeier and .Stephen' Township Volunteer Fire De-
partments will face-off in a hockey game at the Hensall arena.
Scheduled to start at 10 p.m.. firefighters will hit the ice, literally, in a
friendly exhibition game.of shinny, but those involved say it will he more
like a slap -stick spectacle than a show of skill. -
"Some of ourguys have never skated before," said Don Clark, deputy
chief for Stephen Township Fire Department. • .
Exeter Fire Chief John Morgan said many of his personnel arc in the
same boat.
"We can fight fires better than we can play hockey...and if it gets too
rough, l won't he there," he joked, adding both benches will have a tank of
oxygen on standby. .
Game rules and a referee won't he confirmed until the last minute. but
Morgan is, hoping the format will include three 10 -minute periods with
two 20 -minute intermissions. •.
No one is willing to take the blame for initiating this game, but Stephen
Township Chief Rob Pertschy's name did come up in conversation during
the pre -arranged photo shoot where he was noticeably absent. .
"Some of the guys started talking about it and all of a sudden it came to-.
gether," explained Clarke.
"I didn't even know about it until a reporter called me," countered Mor-
gan. "And 1 don't think this is going to be an annual event:"
Both departments meet periodically to practice such things as farm ex-
trications exercises, but rarely have the opportunity to socialize. Clarke
said the hockey game was organized to get the different members together
but he isn't willing to admit.it was a good idea.
"Ask me after the game," he said.
