Show of discipline helps Kennedy score game winner for the Hawks By Chris Skalkos T -A Reporter EXETER - The Exeter Hawks downed two inter -division teams in back-to-back games beating North Middlesex 6-2 on Friday night and Mitchell 5-3 on Saturday. Chris Kennedy put on a show for the home crowd inthe rare Sat- urday* night game against Mitchell Mg late in the third period to give his team the winning goal and then added one more for security with only 1:33 left in the game. His set-up man, Sean McCann, assisted on both plays. In an uncanny show of discipline Kennedy planted himself in fr it of the net as a screen f,.r most olthe third period and took a lot of abuse from the Mitchell defencemen without retaliating. The strategy, imposed by head Lucan Irish score 17 goals in two games before losing to Delhi LUCAN - After scoring a com- bined 17 goals against Mitchell and - Belmont last week the Lucan Irish lost 5-3 to Delhi on Sunday. Delhi scored first in the opening -period and never looked back as they retained the Icad for the entire game. 4 "Colleetively,,we didn.I•play'weJl Oa team," said co -coach Jay Bu - kala. "The thirteen penalties against us didn't help our cause either. • Josh Appleman, Bob Grant and Brad Henderson scored for Lucan. Scott Thompson notched two as- sists. With Delhi leading by one goal • they took a penalty in the last few minutes -of the game ant! Lucan- - tried to capitalize on the situation by pulling their goalie for the sixth attacker._ Despite the two' man tad, 'vantage the Irish couldn't control the puck long enough to create a' scoring opportunity and Delhi sent a long floater- down the length of the ice where another player tapped, the puck into the open net. " "It was' one of those days" said Bukala. The loss to Delhi, a team with a 7-19-4 wirI/loss/tie record, was a surprise for Irish Tans who watched their team defeat Mitchell 7-3 .last Tuesday and humiliate Belmont 10- 0 on .Wednesday night. ,. Seven different goal scorers tal- lied for Lucan against Mitchell with Darryl. Kennedy established a league- -wide reputation for himself last year as an enforcer collecting more penalty minutes than goals,, ant) • with more than 100 penalty min- utes so far this season, he has still clocked more time in the bad boy box than any of his teammates. However, this year he has emerged as a potent offensive threat and is second in scoring with 15 goals. Taking only one penalty, midway' through the game, was a rare feat for Kennedy who kept a cool head,. when the action got chippy. ' - "We had to win --with a short bench," said Kennedy realizing he was more valuable but of the pent alty box. "Sometimes you have to grit your teeth and take the cheap shots for the team." Chad Gilfillan, Chris MacDonald . and Craig. Corriveau scored Exet- er's first three 'goals with Jason Rutledge, Joey McDonald, Jeff Glavin and Jason McBride picking up assists: Revington said putting Kennedy in front of the net was like giving Mitchell a taste of their own med- icine. - "We had too they were doing it to •us all night," said Revington. "Mitchell plays tough and that's how you have to play them to court -- ter their aggression." Kennedy's discipline certainly wasn't a factor in Exeter's win over North Middlesex the night .before as he logged eight minutes in the box on three consecutive penalties . going pointless for the entire game. His teammates did the job with Glavin and Corriveaiu scoring in.the first period and Sean McCann and McDonald scoring in the second. Bill Hodge scored in the third as did McDonald for his second of the. night.. Exeter travelled to Hagersville on Wednesday for a make-up game. however, -results were not known at press time..
