Exeter's silver and bronze medal per-
formance at the Niagara invitational
was their first competition this season
By Chris Skalkos
T -A Reporter
ST. CATHARINES - Both Exeter Precision Skating teams won
medals in their first competitive effort of the season.
The Juvenile team won silver in the gold finals and the Junior
team won bronze at the 1997' Niagara Precision Skating invitational
in St: Catharines on Saturday.
The 20 Juvenile skaters performed their routine in flying colors
placing second after their first skate. Their strong showing allowed
them to advance to the gold finals where they were up against three
other first place teams.
Coach Kathy Merner, said their second skate was even better than
the first because it came near the end of the day and the team had
time to settle their nerves.
She said the Juvenile team has never made the gold finals in com-
petition` before and winning a silver medal was a tremendous ac-
complishment.
The Junior team placed third'after their first skate and despite a
small fall in the second performance, they retained their'position to
finish third overall.
The Canadian Figure Skating Association sanctioned event fea-
tured 54 teams composed of 1,200 skaters and the competition was
intimidating. The juveniles were competing among 13 teams in their
category, the juniors were competing among seven.
Merner said she was surprised at how' well Exeter did at the event
considering they only had a limited amount of time to prcpare.a rou-
tine from scratch"over the last three months.
"I wasn't concerned how they placed as long as they skate a strong
clean program and both teams did that." said Merner, adding she
plans on making some subtle changes to their programs. 1 i think
they're capable of skating a more difficult number."
On February 6. the Exeter Precision Skating team's will perform
their medal winning routines in front of a home crowd at the South
Huron Recreation Centre during their review night: Since the teams
do not compete in Exeter this season this may -be the only occasion
where friends and family members can see them skate' locally.
• The precision teams will travel to Fergus on February 23 for what
may be their toughest test of the season as they compete against•
teams from Western and Central Ontario.
They will also skate in St. Thomas on March I, the Western On-
tario invitational in Waterloo on March 16, and the Markham
Springfest on March 26.
Exeter has four more competitive events this Season and with' the
double medal performance on Saturday Merner has high hopes for
both teams:
"Our goal is to go for the gold medal....it's not out of reach," she
said.

Stephen Township Novice compete at
International Silver Stick Tournament
With key players suffering from the flu, Ste-
phen Township won two out of three games
MICHIGAN - The flu bug took
its toll on the Stephen Township
Novice Hockey team as they com-
peted in the North American inter-
national Silver Stick Tournament in
St. Claire, Michigan over the week-
end.
Stephen won • two out of three
games :n round robin piay but
failed to advance to the semi-finals
after goals for and against were tab-
ulated.
Jason Thompson led Stephen to a
7-1 win over Bancroft in the open-
ing game on Friday with a hat trick
and two assists. Greg Thompson
scored a pair of goals and assists
while Brent Windsor and Calc
Duenk added one each. Blair
McCann recorded two assists and
Leanne Cronyn• and J.T. Knee had
an assist each.
But later that day, tired from the
first game and with three key
layers suffering from the flu, Ste-
phen lost 6-1 to Oro. Greg Thomp-
son scored Stephen's lone goal.
"It was a tough loss," said head
coach Bev Thompson. "We took a
regal beating in the second game...I
think we could have played better if
we were a healthy team."
However. the team regrouped on
Saturday and beat Cayuga 3-1 with
Kent Nicholson. Greg Thompson
and Jason Thompson scoring for
Stephen. Jason and Brent Windsor
picked up assists.
"I was proud of them in that
game. They showed a lot of guts to
bounce back from the loss and play
hard." said Thompson.
After three games each team had
a 2-1 record so officials had to de-
cide a winner using the goals for
and against and Stephen Township
came out on the short end of the
stick. Oro went on to win the "C"
division beating Cayuga 4-2.
"There were a lot of sad faces af-
ter that but i think the parents took
it harder than the kids," said
Thompson who was satisfied with
the outcome. "It was a good tourna-
ment. All the teams were evenly
rnatched."
Playing in a tournament of that
scope can . only help a team and
Thompson said this one was no ex-
ception.
The kids learned they have to
play aggressive style hockey. Even
though its Novice hockey they have
to play tough, not laid hack," he
said adding that was the key to
beating Cayuga in the third game.
The team also had time to simply
hang out and have some fun and
the parents also had the opportunity
to socialize during their two-day-
stay
wo-daystay in Michigan.
Thompson said other teams from
Stephen Township have made it to
the International Silver Stick Tour-
naments in the past and Thoinpson
was there last year when his Atom
team lost a close match in the fi-
nals. However, the highly esteemed
title, considered by some to be as
prestigious as winking an All -
Ontario championship, has always
eluded Stephen Township.
"We keep getting there but we
can't capture one," he said.
The Stephen Township Novice
team earned a berth in the inter-
national tournament after clinching
the Regional Silver Stick in De-
cember winning six consecutive
games in Parkhill. They will play
their last league game on Saturday
and are looking forward to the
WOAA "D" playoffs.
