The Chiefs had trouble against Cayuga in their smaller rink but managed a previous 4-3 win over Cayuga two weeks before. Ben Armstrong opened the scor- ing for the Chiefs on a goal from Ryan Soldan and Paul Knight with only 38 seconds left in the first. At 8:59 of the second, Soldan scored from Matt Sims and Marty deBruyn with 3:20 left in the sec- ond period. Brent Urlin gave the Chiefs -a 3-1 lead with .the period winding down. Early in the third Ryan Soldan scored unassisted and four minutes later he scored his third of the game from Paul Knight and Trevor Tay- lor. With less than three minutes re- maining, Cayuga notched their sec- ond goal. The Chiefs will host Tillsonburg next Saturday evening at 6 p.m. prior to the Exeter Hawks game. Area fans will have an opportunity to see Juvenile and Junior hockey on the same day. The Chiefs play-off schedule is being worked out by General Man- ager John Rasenberg. Coach. Henri deBruyn was pleased with the win but felt that the Chiefs had slowed down to Ca- yuga's tempo near the end of the game. "It seemed to be a slow paced game," he said adding he had a short bench and his two forward lines were getting tired late in the match. Despite the three goal spread, de- Bruyn feels the score should have been higher for Exeter. "We dominated the game, but had trouble finishing. We had break-aways and chances close -in but we couldn't put the puck in the net," he said adding Trevor Taylor had numerous chances to score but was robbed by the crossbar and goal posts. In their own arena, the physically large team from Cayuga is a force to be reckoned with but in Exeter the swift skating Chiefs used their speed to gain the upper -hand. "Cayuga is a big and slow team which helps them on their small ice surface, but when we get them out here. they had trouble containing us," he said. players combine for nine Exeter Hawks all-star goalie Darren Kints gets an assist LUCAN - It seems stopping pucks wasn't good enough for net - minder Darren Kints on Saturday night as he recorded anassist dur- ing the Junior "D" all-star game. Kints, who plays for the Exeter Hawks, earned a starting position between the pipes for the Yeck Conference team at this year's all- star game due to his league leading 2.70 goals against average. His as- sist came midway through second period when the opponents dumped the' pilck 'iri' his•end and Kints left thri net to blbl+r the zone. He sent the puck to centre ice where Jeff Glavin, who also plays for Exeter, intercepted it and set up Mitchell player Eric Staffen for the goal. "It was nice'to get my first assist ,of the year' at the all-star game," said' Kints who recorded three dur- ing the regular season last year. "It was nice to have Jeff in on it too." This was his- second appearance at the Junior "D" all-star game and Kints was grateful for having the opportunity to play again because he wasn't happy with his per- formance last time. "I was really nervous and I had a tough start, but this time 1 was more relaxed," he said. Kints, faced 15 shots in the high ;scoring game allowing only one goal after a pass from behind the net was one -timed by a winger sit- ting on top of his crease beating - him on the stick -side. Including Kints' assist, players representing the Exeter Hawks and the Lucan Irish Six tallied for nine points as the Yeck Conference team defeated the McConnell con- ference 13-2. For Exeter, Dan Taylor recorded four assists, and Glavin scored a goal and one assist. For Lucan,- Mikc Jaremchenko notched an as- sist and Scott Thompson scored one goal. Exeter Hawks coach and manag- er, Dave Revington, teamed up with Mount Brydges coach Jacques Beaulieu behind the bench: Both earned the position because of their outstanding team records. Jon "Bubbles" Passmore, also from Ex- eter was included among the Yeck bench trainers. "We kind of had them out- matched. I like to see a closer game," said Revington about the •-Iopsided 13-2 win. "But there's not much you can do when the puck drops." LUCAN - The Lucan Irish re- bounded from—tight 2-1 loss against Wellesley last Wednesday to earn a hard fought 6-2 win over -Thamesford on Friday. Midgets makethe finals at North American Silver Stick tournament Elora edged Exeter 4-3 in the championship match after sweeping the first three games SARNIA - The Exeter Midget RSD Generals came within one goal of winning the "North Amer- ican Midget "B" Silver Stick Championship in Sarnia on Sun- day. Exeter clinched three wins to earn a berth in the finals against Elora, a team they beat the day be- fore. After playing to a 3-3 tie Elo- ra scored with only 41.5 seconds left in the third period to steal the championship. Jeff Campbell scored all three goals for Exeter with Dave Far- quhar, Geoff Maver, Cam Dougall and Tyler Bourne picking up the as- sists. B.J. Theophilopoulos stood up to many aggressive shots in the fast paced game. The road to the finals began on the opening game of the round rob- in tournament with an 11-0 win over a team from Tampa Bay, Flor- ida. Eleven Exeter players jumped into the scoring frenzy notching points to give their sunny state op- ponents a Canadian style drubbing. Chad Dalrymple scored a hat trick for the RSD Generals, Bourne scored twice and Dougall, Maver, Greg Geoffery, Jason Grenicr, Ryan Freiter and Luke Sims scored one goal each. Brian Parsons had three assists, Farquhar had two and Scott Rasenberg had one. Exeter met another, American team in game two but this one was much closer as Exeter defeated Dayton, Ohio 5-4. The RSD Generals came out quickly in the early morning game scoring three goals in the second period, however, they slowed down in the third allowing Dayton to score two unanswered goals and then get the tieing goal at 11:14 of the third period. Tied at four, Exeter netminder Theophilopoulos made a number of game saving saves allowing Camp- bell to score the game winner at 14:04 of the third period. Later that same day Exeter met Elora for game three beating them 4-3 in another close game. Both teams entered the game un- defeated and Exeter needed a win or a tie to advance to the final round. Elora proved to be a worthy op- ponent as they pressed forward and checked harder than the first two teams. Both teams played at 7 a.m. on Saturday and were well rested since they had 12 hours before their evening games. - Maver and Bourne scored a pair of goals with Bourne pumping in the game winner with less than two minutes remaining in the third launching Exeter into the cham- pionship game on Sunday morning. Co -coaches Dave Dalrymple and Tim Moore said the one goal loss in the final was a bitter pill to swal- low considering they beat Elora the game before. "They (the players) took it hard," said Dalrymple. "I thought we played a lot better but we seemed to hit a lot of posts and crossbars and we weren't able to capitalize when we needed to." Moore agreed. "We definitely outplayed them. The better team didn't win this one," said Moore. RSD Midget Generals manager, Bill Brock said the team gained much valuable experience and are winners in the long -run because the experience they gained will help them in the playoffs. Moore agreed. "The guys experienced what it's like to be down when you need to win in a pressure situation," he said. "It was a nerve-racking week- end." Dalrymple said one of the biggest challenges of the tournament was adjusting to a different style of play when they met a different team as talent ranged from one extreme to the other. According to Dalrymple there was only one way to play the Americans. "They're kind of soft. Once we took the physical play to them they fell apart," he said. The North American Silver Stick was a unifying experience for the team but, Dalrymple said the team cohesion began even before they left for Sarnia when team sponsor Ron Bogart from RSD Sport Den- Authentics presented the entire team with matching jackets after their last regular season game. "That seemed to bring them to- gether. We were really pumped by the time we got there," he said. The Exeter midgets finished their regular league schedule in Exeter prior to their silver Stick competi- tion placing second in the Sham- rock North division and will play their first OMHA playoff game against Forest on Wednesday at tate South Huron Recreation Centre be- fore they travel to Dresden on Sat- urdhy. Exeter will play a home and home series with Lambeth, Dres- den and Forest. was marked by tough defence. "It was intense" and hard hitting just like a playoff game," said Bu - kala adding there were very few penalties called. Bukala said the win over Tha- mesford and their solid per- formance against Wellesley has boosted the team's confidence level hut he warns the team is still not out of trouble. -We're getting back on track but our confidence isn't IQ) per cent yet," he said. However, he credits the team's defensive play for im- proving adding they only have 10 goals , against in their last four games. The Irish are only two points away from third place in their divi sion with a 15-13-2 record. They played a pivotal make-up game against Mitchell, which currently • holds third place in the Morenz di- vision, on Tuesday night, however results were not available by press - time. A win would put them beside Mitchell in a two-way tie for third. Lucan will. host Belmont on Wednesday.
