January 15, 1997 Page 7 New recruits Being a firefighter isn't just about extinguishing fires and rescuing kittens from trees. This is what from left, Greg Clarke, Brian Gaiser and Deric McCann discovered when they were given the spit -and -shine duties .at the Stephen Township Fire Hall last Wednesday. The three men, along with John O'Neil, Daryl Kingma and John Relouw joined the Stephen Township Volunteer Fire Department recently and are undergoing basic training. All three said they decided to volunteer because they wanted to serve their community. Officers installed at UCW meeting Rev. Tolmay installed the officers on Monday night. Rhoda Rohde Thames Road correspondent THAMES ROAD - The January' meeting ofthe U.C.W. was held on Monday evening with 25 people at- tending. Rev. Jock Tolmay conducted an installation service and closed with prayer. Sharon Passmore welcomed eve- ryone and gave a poem "Welcome to 1997". Joan Morgan read scripture and Helen Webber gave a prayer and a ,' reading "Ten Commandments of Giving". The group ehjoyed several num- bers on the piano played by Alma Ballantyne. Passmore and Morgan presented a skit "The Parade" with Webber and Ballantyne reading scriptures pertaining to the skit. Webber gave a reading "Recipe for a Happy New Year" after the offering was collected. President Beatrice . Dawson opened the business part of the meeting. The roll call, minutes and correspondence were dealt with. Marilyn Pym gave the treasurer's report: Jean Hodgert gave the Board of Managers report. Anne Bray gave the Regal card report, stating that she had $425 to give to the treasurer. The visiting committee for the next four months are: Group U - Kay Hodgert; Group C - Judith Parker; Group W - Jean Hodgert. It was decided to have travelling dinners. The annual meeting of Huron - Perth Presbytery; U.C.W. will be held at . Thamesview United Church, Fullarton on February 10 at 9:30 a.m. The snow date is Feb- ruary 17. Group C served a lunch and bev- erage. Rev. Jock Tolmay was in charge of the church service on Sunday morning, the first Sunday after Epiphany. The minister told the children a story. The choir sang "Dear Hearts" accompanied by organist Agnes Bray. Rev. Tolmay read the scriptures. Everyone read Psalm 29. the title of Rev. Jock's sermon was "Crea- tion Revisited." Barry Jeffrey and Paul Warwick received the offering. Annual meetings will be held at Thames Road Church on January 26 and at Elimville Church on Feb- ruary 3 at 7 p.m. • Executive inducted at Greenway Eloise Eagleson assumes the du- ties of the U.C.W. president. By Annie Morenz Shipka correspondent SHiPKA - At the January 5 service at Greenway United Church, the new executive members of the U.C.W. were inducted by Rev. Putman. The new presi- dent is Eloise Eagleson; vice president Isobel Bullock; secretary Johanna Eagleson and treasurer Elisabeth Hoffstra. There is a euchre party planned in Shipka at 7:30 p.m. tonight. Wednesday. Happy birthday wishes go to Gertie . Stade this month. Gerald and Cora Wurm of Exeter were visitors with Kcn and Marg Baker on New Years Day. Annie Ziehnan hosted her family Christmas Decem- ber 2R. Attending were Gerald and Mary Ellen and family, Ruth and Jcrry Zehr and family, Zurich, Deb - hie and Roger Ward and family, Port Franks, Susie and Wayne Robson and family. Essex and Angie and Mark Dousfield and Dirk, from Belmont. The Snyder family_ celebrated their Christmas dinner on December 29 at Edwin and Gail Snyder's home at Mt. Brydges. From this area were Ferman and Leota, Jim and Judy and children, Suzanne and Otto Plein, Melissa and Christopher, Elmira, Esther and Ric Sto- rey and sons, London, and Keith and Nancy Snyder, Greenway. Bob and Charlene Meininger, of New Hampshire visited during the holidays with their cousins, Pat and Jake Schroeder. Dave and Marilyn Durand and family and Emma Schilbe, of Zurich, Gary, Sheona and Jeffery Baker, Ken and Marg Baker, enjoyed Sunday brunch with Don, Sharon and Jamie Baker, to celebrate Jamie's 2Ist birthday. Bill and Linda Long of Waterloo, spent a couple of days with Melvin and Gertie Stade and 011ie and Sher- rie Edwards, over the holidays. An appropriate poem "Stone Soup" was read by Bernice Reid. Anna Keys and Margaret Hayter gave readings. President Charles Reid opened the meeting and the financial report was given by Bob Stirling. The history of the club was given by the first president Elmer Hayter (1984). Past president Anna Keys was presented with past president jew- els. Reid read statistics of Huron County. After a game of winter bingo, the seniors finished the afternoon with euchre games. The next meeting will be a pot- luck luncheon at 12:30 p.m., Febru- ary 14. Varna -Goshen combined church service was held in Varna on Janu- ary 12 with Rev. Tracy Crick lead- ing the worship. The Sacrament of Holy Baptism ceremony was held. McKayla Christine Merner, daugh- ter of Lori and Rod, and sister to Katrina, was baptized. Proud grandparents are Torn and Barb Consitt and Garry and Maxine Merner. Combined church services will be held in Goshen this Sunday. Goshen will hold their annual meeting January 26 following the church service. Varna will hold their annual meeting February 2. If you have any. items that need to be included in the annual reports, be sure to have them in as soon as possible. Varna ,U.C.W. will not have a January meeting. If you have any questions call Debbie Rathwell. The new listings for the 1997 meet- ings are posted on the U.C.W. bul- letin board downstairs. The Teens met at the Brucefield Manse on Sunday. The Trends met Friday evening for a sleepover and enjoyed movies, games and bible readings. They will meet January 24 at the Brucefield Church at 7:30 p.m. Congratulations to Laurie and Pat Haggit on the arrival of their new son, who was the New Year's baby in Clinton. Jessie is a brother to Kyle and Lauren. Tickets are available for the Stan- ley Township Rec Committee elim- ination truck draw from any rec committee member or council member or at the Stanley Town- ship Office for $100 each.
