Defence key to winning first gold medal
WALKERTON - The Exeter
Seven and Under Ringette team
travelled to Walkerton recently and
brought home the gold.
Exeter finished Round Robin
Play with a win and two ties. After
round robin play Exeter had to wait
the outcome of the Elora vs, Wal-
kerton game. A tie between them
would have knocked Exeter out due
to a three-way tie with Elora and
Walkerton.
Exeter earned second place when
Elora won the game with only 40
seconds left in the game.
The final match was an end-to-
end game with Elora leading in the
first period. Exeter took control in
the second and went on to heat Elo-
ra 7-4.
Coaching staff say defence was
the key factor in all of their games.
The was the first time the Seven
and Under (the Bunnies) won a
tournament and for ten of the
players it was their first earned,
medal in ringettc.
The Exeter Petite "A" Ringctte
team also won a gold medal at the
tourney after' they beat Stratford 4-
I in a fast and tough game. Both
sides recorded many shots on net
and Exeter goalie Arnie McCann
made some key saves.
The Exeter Petite "A" team won the Dave Cassidy Memo-
rial Tournament in Walkerton. Back row from left,. Assist-
ant coach Julie Ritchie, Megan Skinner, Amy Taylor, Shan-
non Baer, Jamie Darling, Amber Preszcator, assistant
coach Kevin Baer. Front row, Sarah Hessel, Karly Pinder,
Arnie McCann, Chantelle Elder, Julie Farquhar, Denise
Ritchie, Chelsey Mommersteeg. Missing: Ken Farquhar,
coach.
The Petite team earned a birth in
the final after defeating host team
Walkerton 4-2, Tiverton 9-2 and
Mount Forest IQ -6.
Coach Ken Farquhar said the
girls rallied from a 3-2 deficit
against Mount Forest scoring eight
goals to take the game.

Exeter Chiefs look forward to '97
EXETER - The Exeter Chiefs
look forward to the second half of
the season, having been successful
in 1996.
The good news for the Chiefs is
that they have been classified as
Juvenile 'CC'. Manager John Ra-
senbcrg is pleased that his team has
been fairly relegated to this divi-
sion for OMHA playoffs. The 'B'
category that the Chiefs played in
during the 1995-96 season made it
difficult to compete with larger
centres although they had defeated
Aylmer in that category in the On-
tario semi-finals last year. in league
play this year, the Chiefs have split
evenly with Aylmer -at 1-0-1 and -a
four for, four against, identical
record.
Much of the Chiefs success is
due to their scoring ability com-
bined with a strong defense and
goaltending. The Executive and
coaches anticipate a strong showing
in both league and playoff action.
Brian Richardson and Bryon El-
lerington arc returning following
hand and wrist injuries respective-
ly. Ryan Soldan returned after sit-
ting two games with a wrist injury
and Ryan Beckett returned from a
leg injury. With injuries and sus-
pensions at a minimum the Chiefs
were ready for action at thc South
Huron Rec Centre on Saturday
night.
The Chiefs skated to a 3-1 victo-
ry over thc New Hamburg Juve-
niles. The Chiefs were strong
through the first period and a half
and then played at a slower pacc.
Assistant coach bon Richardson at-
tributed this to a lay over when thc
A
players had not skated for several
days.
Gavin Snell opened the scoring
for the Chiefs from Blake Schadc at
8:44 of the first. A minute +23 into
the second, Marty deBruyn made it
2-0 on a set up from Ted Hoffman
and Gavin Snell. At 10:53 of the
second, Ryan Soldan cashed in
from Jeremy Stewart and Gavin
Snell to make it 3-0. Midway
through the third, New Hamburg
scored their lone goal.
On Sunday. the Juveniles trav-
elled to Cayuga where they ground
out a hard fought 4-3 victory.
On the smaller ice surface, a
physical Cayuga squad took away
.Exeter's ability to move the pick
around and skate freely. The Chiefs
built a 3-0 lead and had to hang on
to a 4-3 win. At 8:50 of the first,
Ryan Soldan scored from Brian
Richardson. Thirty-four seconds
later, Paul Knight scored from a
Ben Kaak pass and less than a min-
ute later, Knight notched his second
unassisted. At 13:49 of the third,
Marty deBruyn gave the Chiefs a 4-
2 lead with Kaak assisting. Despite
a good performance, the Chiefs had
difficulty adjusting to a small ice
surface. Two of Cayuga's three
goals were deflected into the Exeter
net by Exeter defensemen.
The Chiefs begin Silver Stick
play on Thursday at 9:15 p.m. in
Mooretown.

Star game.
This is MacLean's sec-
ond time playing in the Jr.
"B" all-star game. He made his first
appearance playing for the Mid -
Western South Conference year.
MacLean has scored four goals
and 22 assists with the
Dutchmen in 27 games so
far this season and is look-
ing forward to having an-
other opportunity to play
among the best in the
league.
Recently, MacLean, 17,
was drafted by the the
Kitchener Junior "A"
Rangers at the last OHL
draft, he showed up for
training camp but chose
not to sign on with the
Rangers to keep his op-
tions open.
MacLean said his marks are very
good in high school and he has his
eye on a US scholarship, but he ex-
plained, he wouldn't be eligible to
play college hockey if he played in
the Junior "A" league.
"I've decided an education comes
first," said the six foot 200 Ib. de-
fenceman adding it was a very dif-
ficult decision to make. "Playing in
the OHL is every kids dream, but

game. The 5"11 210 Ib.
defenceman earned the
honor of being one of
only two players on his
team chosen to play after
scoring seven goals and
16 assists for Strathroy
so far this season.
"I was still surprised
because there are a( lot of
good players on the
team," he said.
Bell, 18, signed with
Jeff MacLean the Strathroy Rockets
last summer but has al-
ready been delegated the
role of assistant, captain. He played
Jr "D" hockey last year and his role
with the Hawks gained the atten-
tion of Junior "B" scouts after earn-
ing 15 points in 26
games during the regular
season. Bell became a
major force for the
Hawks scoring nine
goals and eight assists
during the playoffs earn-
ing the Best Defenceman
Award. His performance
helped Exeter to it's first
O.H.A. Jr "D" cham-
pionship in 20 years.
Like MacLean, Bell is
not dreaming about play-
ing hockey in the OHL
and is also keeping his eyes open
for a US scholarship.
"I'd rather finish my schooling. I
think. an education is very im-
portant," he said.
Andy Glavin, 19, played in the Jr.
"B" All-Star games in Welland and
Fort Erie on December 28 and 29.
Glavin, who attends Brock Uni-
versity in St. Catharines, was fea-
tured in the T -A on Dec. 23.
