Figure skaters pass test day
EXETER - The Exeter Figure
Skating Club has produced a num-
ber of talented figure skaters over
the years and the top grades given
to each individual skater on test
day recently confirms that tradition
continues. -
• Three times a year the club skat-
ers are tented by Canadian Figure
Skating Association' judges - who
pass them on to higher levels—if
• they make the grade. On Dec. 19,
almost all of them did.
According to Deb Roy, Test Day
_chairperson, it is not uncommon to
have a high failure rate, especially
in the first test of the season. But,
out of-Alt,34 tests conducted that
day only five didn't pass.
"Sometimes you're lucky to have
50 per centof the skaters pass and
it gets more difficult in higher lev-
els," said Roy. "The success rate to-
day speaks for the coaches. It tells
us they are working hard to get the:
kids where they are at."
Approximately ; 25 -skaters were
tested on the ice- surface at- - the
South Huron Recreation Centre -
from preliminary levels -up to gold,
with .some skating for more than • '
one test.
Gold is highest level that. canbe
reached by a figure skater and club
member Melissa Timmenmans
reached gold in two of her dances.
"It's a real achievement to reach
that level..k takes a lot of work and
dedication. " *said volunteer Tammy
Iennison adding it can take up to) 0. •

away Mildmay? -I to earn a
berth in the semi-finals where
they met Milverton, a wild-
card team.
Stephen got on the board

by the end of the second

the third period.
Head coach Randy Somer-
ville said it was a disappoint-
ing lossbecause he knew
they were ,capable of beat-
ing Milverton:
"The boys were pumped up
for a win and I thought they
were going to go all the
way," he said crediting Mil-
verton for playing a smarter
game. "They played their
positions well and skated
harder than we did. They
came out to win."
Somerville said the team,
which was a little overconfi-
dent going into the game,
learned a valuable lesson
from the Silver Stick Tourna-
ment and are eager to get
back into regular league ac-
tion.
"We have to put this loss •
behind us...we have a lot of
hockey left," he said.
