Direcicirs-report- ed-a season surplus of $43,000 ash of December 4.4.. This, the third. -year- following the financial crisis , that jeopardized the- existence of the Blyth Festival, was to focus on strengthening the Board, reinforc- . ing the Festival's financial position, and improving administration.• - "The effect of the- crisis in '93 ' "has, 1 think. made us conscious .of • how vulnerable the Festival is, and aware of how hard it is '4 ,keep alive creativity and risk without al- ienating our.audience," said. Artis- tic Director Janet Amos. "One of . Blyth Festivals' greatest assets is the incredible sense of. Company which is created because we work in repertory. This generates • lobe* and loyalty and is one of the rea- sons for Blyth's survival and con- tinued growth." Attendance for the 1996 summer season was 29.150 or 69 per cern of capacity. The season's surplus was partially attributed to five extra per- formances of the popular_ Darn - dance Live! and an extra perfor- mance of Villa Eden. Box office sales contributed 41 per cent of the theatre's summer season -revenue while ongoing support from both The Canada Council and the Onta- rio Arts Council contributed 23 f,er cent to thc theatre's operations. Employment grants contributed three per cent. The balance came 'from a successful -Annual Operat- ing Fundraising Campaign and earned revenue. Strongactivity in the Capital Fund resulted in a $44,600 reduc- tion in the Festival's mortgage. Af- ter $14,585 was spent on much- needed' upgrades to the Festival's lighting and sound equipment, • there was still a seasonal surplus of $33,500 in the Capital Fund. After careful consideration of the theatre's long-term capital needs, , the Board' of Directors decided stir . transfer thc- $25,000 Lieutenant Governor's Award for the Arts tri 1 thc Capital Reserve_Fundt This re- servc• of $70.000'• reflects the Board's long-range strategic plan- , ning for the Festival's future, given its mandate to deKelop and pro- duce new Canadian plays. Both the Festival Singers and the Art Gallery are conittees of the Blyth Centre for the' Arts.
