The Night Before
Christmas
By Jessica Maries Legacy, Grade
Exeter Public School
"Can we have a talk with you
Jane?" "Sure mom. What's the
problem'?"
"Well honey, the taxes are going
up a lot, so that means we might be
short on money for Christmas."
It was just the night before
Christmas and we only had four
presents under the tree. "Is that ok
with, you if you get less presents`
this yea?"
"Mom it doesn't bother me as
long as we have each other."
All .day I was thinking about
what mom said. After dinner, we
wenshopping and I took my $50
bill to buy my parents something. I
told mom where I was going. When
I turned around, mom and dad were
in the pet shop. I 'got an idea of
what I'm getting for another Christ-
mas present. When we came back
home around 7:30 I was so excited
for the neat day. I fell asleep earlier
than I expected. I usually stay up.
and read. My dream was that .I got
a puppy, a little baby lab. She was
black because I love black dogs and
I think they're so cute. The next
morning I woke mom and dad, then
ran downstairs. Mom had a smile
on her face. I opened up my first
present. it was a CD player, some-
thing that I have wanted for a long
time. I opened the three other
Tips for a hassle -free holiday
The holidays are right around the corner and it's time to get in that
yule -tide frame of mind. Getting your home and, yourself ready for all
the fun is definitely step one. Remember, this year can be the best ever
if you're prepared for all the surprises that the holidays bring. To help
make this season more enjoyable and stress -free, follow these three
easy steps - and stay close,;() the mistletoe!
t Make our home warm and cozy. With friends, relatives and unex-
pected visitors stopping by, your house or apartment should be both
welcoming and festive. To make your environment "scent-sational"
and your state of mind more relaxed, put a few cinnamon sticks in a
pan of cider and simmer on the stove - the delicious aroma will fill
your home. Give your bathroom a holiday ambience with pretty bowls
of potpourri and matching candles. And don't stop at the inside of your
home - fragrant holiday wreaths with aromatic berries and dried flow-
ers will welcome your guests before they even step inside.
ta Attitude is everything. With. holiday parties filling your calendar,
you naturally want to look and feel your best. The "heat is on, with
fuzzy mohair sweat -dresses and crushed velvet jumpers - they're all
the rage this year! Don't get overheated from all the excitement in
these winter fabrics. Stay cool and dry with an edge of self-assurance
which is the key to merry mingling.' Remember, don't stand by the
eggnog waiting for someone to apOroach you - introduce yourself to
unknown guests and smile, smile,.smile! Your strong self-esteem will
light up the room.

ipated hungry guest. The trick it to:be'prepared. Stock up on beverages'
and snack foods that won't spoil,' 'such as pretzels, chips and dried
fruits. Prepare freezable holiday cookies and hors d'oeuvres, like mini -
quiches and French bread pitzas, ahead of time. When guests arrive,
pop them in the oven forli few minutes, serve - and, you'll be every-
one's favorite holiday hostess.
And to reciprocate for those "surprise" gifts that arrive on your
doorstep, keep a secret stash of holiday tins filled with cookies and
candy, and make sure they're wrapped elegantly with a festive red
bow. People will never know they weren't on your original holiday
list.
te Although the holidays can be frenetic, they should be an enjoya-
ble time with loving friends and family. Make the most of this special
time by planning ahead and following these three easy tips. Have a
sensational holiday season!
