Area residents will now have ac- cess to an innovative peer support program which is especially tail- ored to match people living with cancer with a volunteer who has gone through a similar experience. The service is entirely provided over the telephone. "Coping with the emotional ef- fects of cancer can be as important as treating the actual disease," says Canadian Cancer Society volunteer Monica Gilhuly. "CancerConnec- tion lets people with cancer talk to someone who has been there, some- one who understands." A pilot project for CancerCon- nection was conducted by the Ca- nadian Cancer Society and the On- tario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation in northern Ontario from November 1995 to March 1996. To date, 198 matches have been made. By the end of the year CancerConnection will be available across the province. According to Dr. Fred Ashbury, Associate Director of the National Cancer Institute's Centre for Be- havioural Research and Program Evaluation, a number of studies have proven that social support has a positive impact on a cancer pa- tient's prognosis. "People who have access to sup- portive care services have experi- enced a significantly better quality of life and there is evidence of peo- ple actually living longer," says Ashbury. CancerConnection builds on the Canadian Cancer Society's exten- sive peer support services, recog- nizing that in every community there are people living with cancer who cannot find peer support close to home. By drawing on a database of cancer survivors feom across the province, • CancerConnection both increases the likelihood that an ap- propriate volunteer can be found, and provides anonymity for people who want to keep their diagnosis confidential. Because a diagnosis Of cancer of- ten means increased responsibility for family and friends of cancer pa- tients, CancerConnection will also offer them peer support services. CancerConnection can be reached with one toll free telephone call. Cancer patients and the family and friends who would like to reach CancerConnection should call 1- 800-263-6750. Anyone with a re- cent cancer experience who is inter- ested in becoming a CancerConnec- tion peer support volunteer can contact CancerConnection at the same telephone number, or call their local Canadian Cancer Society office. In 1996 it is estimated that 50,100 new cancer cases will be di- agnosed in Ontario, and 22,500 people will die from the disease. Three types of cancer account for more than 50 per cent of new cases of cancer.Among women, these are breast, colorectal and lung cancers, and among men, these are prostate, lung and colorectal can- cers.Because cancer is primarily a disease of older Canadians, the ag- ing of the baby -boom generation means that there will be a signifi- cant increase in the number of new cases in the coming years.
