homes
GODERICH - Christmas
lights and decorations were re-
ported stolen from about six
Goderich homes during the last
weekend in November, reported
the Goderich Signal -Star.
The thefts have amounted to
values under $ 100 and in some
cases, entire strands of lights
were taken.
Some lights have been recov-
ered nearly a block away from
the victimized homes, either
tucked in bushes or, according
to the Star, "with bulbs broken
after being jumped on."
Exeter and Lucan have suf-
fered similar incidents recently.

MITCHELL - Early next year,
Mitchell Council will begin dis-
cussion on the possible forma-
tion of a Business Improvement
Association for the town.
According to the Mitchell Ad-
vocate, three council sessions
are necessary to introduce the
idea, with a public meeting to be
included.
Councillor Mike Van Pelt told
the Advocate the idea will not
go ahead unless clear direction
or interest is shown by down-
town merchants.
Mitchell has attempted to im-
plement both a DIA and Cham-
ber of Commerce during past
years, but on each occasion it
has failed due largely to declin-
ing membership.

MITCHELL - The two crimi-
nal charges against former
Mitchell Police Chief Chuck
Zehr were dropped in Stratford
provincial court in late Novem-
ber, reported the Mitchell Advo-
cate.
"I'm just glad it's over," said
Zehr, who had charges of threat-
ening former Constable Rudy
Hartfiel dropped.
The withdrawl of the charges
was the final step in ending a
10 -month ordeal for Zehr, who
pleaded guilty to two Police Act
charges before the Mitchell Po-
lice Services Board in Mitchell
on Nov. 12.
Three other charges under the
Police Act were dropped. Zehr
had been suspended with pay
since March 4 and fined five
days pay.
Under conditions of withdraw-
ing the criminal charges, Zehr
agreed to have no contact with
Hartfiel, nor work in the same
Ontario Provincial Police de-
tachment for one year, begin-
ning Nov. 29. During the same
period, Zehr is not allowed to
act in a supervisory manner over
Hartfiel, nor be in a reporting re-
lationship with him.
A date is now being set for
Zehr's re-classification hearing,
moving him one step closer to
officially joining the OPP.
