By Mary Peterson Centralia correspondent CENTRALIA - The past weekend really moved holi- day celebrations into high gear. December 1 was the first Sunday of Advent and celebration of the Sacra- ment of Communion. Andrea Hern was welcomed to Zion West United Church and at Centralia United Church, Mary Peterson was welcomed from Melville United Church. The Manse Committee provided a turkey dinner for members of Faith Tabernacle on November 29. In Centralia and Huron Park, area residents enjoyed the annual Santa Claus Parade on December 1 spon- sored by the Stephen Township Volunteer Firefighters. At Centralia Library, Maxine Hyde wants to inform patrons of the upcoming holiday schedule. The library will be closed on December 24 and will not reopen un- til January 7. To meet budget targets, all libraries in Huron will be closed between Christmas and New Year's. ,z aet ,. rt The U.C.W. at Zion West and Centralia United Churches will host Christmas Dinner Programs on De- cember 5. Spouses and families are invited to attend. Centralia will hold social time from 6 to 6:30 p.m., din- ner at 6:30 p.m., and the program to follow. Zion will hold a potluck dinner at 7 p.m. followed by the pro- gram. On December 7, the Youth Group at Zion West will offer babysitting service from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost per family will be $10 for the day. Parents should pro- vide lunch for their children. Snacks and juice will be provided. Call Becky Hem at 229-6947. On December 8, the McCurdy Public School Choir will perform at Centralia United Church. Zion West United Church will celebrate White Gift Sunday that same day. Pastor Heather Scott will lead the Christmas Com- munion Service at Exeter Villa on December 19 at 7 p.m. This will be a service of scripture, carols and communion. The Youth Group will assist with wor- ship, and anyone who can help is invited to attend. Christmas concerts will be held December 20 at Cen- tralia United Church at 7 p.m. and at Zion at 8 p.m. A combined choir from Zion West and Centralia United Churches is preparing a special Christmas Can- tata. The Cantata will be performed on December 22 at 9:45 a.m. at Zion and at Centralia at 11:30 aim. Christmas dinner served at Blue Water Rest Home, ZURICH - "The Santa Clause" starring Tim Allen, was the Mon- day afternoon movie at Blue Water Rest Home. This was appropriate , as the Auxiliary members were busy most of the day putting up the decorations for Christmas. On Tuesday the Grade 5 Buddies of St. Boniface School, along with Sister Susan and volunteer helpers made popcorn strings, paper deco- rations, string kites and string beads and decorated a Christmas tree in the auditorium. Everyone sang Christmas songs and each child re- ceived a chocolate Santa from the residents. Wednesday afternoon tea was served by Cathy Shantz, Adjuvant and Ann McBride, Hobby Room Convener. Pastor Ross Thomson, St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Zurich conducted Thursday afternoon Chapel Ser- vice. Audrey Haberer was the or- ganist. Thursday evening the residents enjoyed Ted Danson's "Challenge of the Seas" and "Peddling Para- dise." They also listened to a 1948 radio broadcast of "Fiber McGee and Molly." Meagon Ratcliffe, a grade 11 student at Central Huron Secondary School has been volun- teering on Thursday evenings to as- sist the Adjuvant with her activity programs and help feed special care residents. It was Christmas celebration time at Blue Water on Sunday afternoon as resident family members visited the Home for the annual resident/ family dinner. Two hundred and eighty-seven adults and 26 under - ten children enjoyed the turkey, ham, Christmas pudding dinner served by the kitchen staff under the direction of Kathy Steckle, cook supervisor. The kitchen also fed the 65 residents and all the Auxiliary and director/spouse vol- unteer help (approximately 422 in all). The winner of the Pink Patch Quilt was Adeline Denomy, a resi- dent at the Home and a talented quilter herself. Violet Beam of Pennsylvania, a daughter of resi- dent Elizabeth Gingerich, won the blue donation quilt. Liz Fielding, Mississauga, a friend of Bob and Muriel Carson won a night shirt and Marie Denomme of Zurich won the pine quilt rack made by Gerald Riehl of Exeter. The entertainment for the dinner was giveu by volunteers Hugh Harper as pianist from 3 to 4 p.m.; 1 Helen and Lloyd Otterbein of Ma- plewoods Apartments on tambou- rine, guitar and banjo and Judy and l Wayne Otterbein singing and guitar playing from 4 to 5 p.m. From 5 to 6 p.m. Audrey Haberer, Zurich and I Leona McBride of Goderich played t duet on the piano, organ and trum-' Pet. Bill and Deb Riesberry won the Hay Days Committee Early Bird Draw for two to Frankenmuth on December 8.Committee members Fred Haberer and Glen Thiel, with the assistance of Agnes Cottrell, Home Secretary, made the draw on Sunday evening at the Home after the resident/family dinner guest; were served. The residents look forward to the Christmas program with the Auxil- iary on December 3 and bingo Thursday evening, in lieu of the usual Friday evening bingo: Condolences to the family and friends of the late Theodore (Ted) Henry Steinbach, who passed away at Blue Water on November 28 in his 95th year. A resident at the Home the past four and a half years, a member of the Zurich area, Ted was not a big man in stature but had a big heart. He was always ready for a good joke and took an interest in the happenings at the Home. He was a big Blue Jay fan and hardly missed a game, no mat- ter how late. He also took great in- terest in the clergy who visited the Home and gave credit to those whom he felt preached a good ser- mon. Clown entertains The clown and a pup- pet told the children a story. By H. Davis Saintsbury correspondent SAINTSBURY - St. Patrick's celebrated a Holy Eucharist service December 1 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Stanley Jay officient. Clown Billy Pickle and puppet Mr. Grump gave a children's focus based on the first candle in the Ad- vent Wreath for love and the com- ing of Jesus. Starr Davis assisted with the lighting of the candle. Margaret Carroll read the scrip- ture lessons and Courtney MacGil- livray was server for the service. December 8, St. Patrick's will celebrate Morning Prayer service at 10:30 a.m. On Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. St. Patrick's A.C.W. will hold their Christmas meeting at Hazel's home. Members are re- minded to bring items for Daily Bread, a gift for exchange and a Christmas verse or reading for roll call. The senior women of St. Pat- rick's held another successful meat piemaking on Monday of last week, completing the orders prior to Christmas. Crimes of the week Mischief The rear tail lights were smashed out of a 1995 Pontiac November 27. The vehicle was sitting at the Exeter Ranch House Restaurant on Main Street in Exeter. The damage to the car is about $400. Break and enter Crooks broke into General Manufacturing on Oxford Street, Hensall on November 25 or 26. Once inside the culprits ransacked the offices and smashing doors into the office. Several computers were stolen from the office area which were worth thousands of dollars. Bill and Betty Johnson of Owen Sound called on the Davis's Friday and Hugh and Hazel Davis visited this week with cousin Marlys Quinton of London and on Sunday with cousins Audrey and Bruce McLean of Seaforth, who celebrat- ed their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday. St. Patrick's Christmas Pageant is to be held during the church ser- vice December 22 at 10:30 a.m. A social time will follow in the Parish Hall with a visit from Santa.
