THE INTREPID SNOWMOBILER By Craig Nicholson Over the years, I've had many readers inquire about who I am and what I do. Hopefully, that's not their polite way of asking "Who is this nut and what does he know about snowmobiling?" As a season opener, I'll attempt to establish a comfort level so you'll be confident on getting the straight goods. I've been a snowmobiler for over twenty years, originally using my Kawartha Lakes cottage as a winter base. In 1988, I retired from a twenty year career in the business end of the music industry to pursue my interest in writing. Since my two favourite past times are snowmobiling and cottaging, that's where I decided to focus my attention. After all, I was already living the research. Over the next couple of years, I self -syndicated two columns, The Intrepid Snowmobiler and The Intrepid Cottager, to over 75 Ontario weekly and daily newspapers. As the snowmobiling column grew in popularity, two changes occurred: snowmobile and recreation publications began to call offering assignments; and I had to increase my snow time to collect experiences to write about. Tough job, eh? The Intrepid Snowmobiler is not a performance column. That's because I choose to provide pews, information and tips for the average family snowmobiler - material that is user-friendly and hands-on practical to make your day-to-day riding more comfortable, safe and fun. Frankly, I don't care how snowmobiles work. I only want to write about the going and the doing. Also, as my riding companions will attest, I couldn't tech -talk my way out of a burning garage, much less effect a serious sled repair. But I do pack all the tools, just in case! I always try to keep my writing perspective down to earth. With a few exceptions, the adventures I relate can be duplicated by other enthusiastic snowmobilers, couples included. My opinions on snowmobiling and products is based on actual experiences and/or test usage in normal touring situations. My goal is to keep it light, entertaining and fun. Today, I continue to write both syndicated columns. The Intrepid Snowmobiler now appears in 20 state and provincial publications too. I also write two regular national snowmobiling columns and another one for OFSC club newspapers. As a free-lance journalist, I pen touring stories for Snow Goer Canada, Outdoor Canada and Cottage Life Magazines. Recently, The Intrepid Snowmobiler hit the airwaves with a radio feature broadcast on 50 Ontario stations. And if I haven't out -lived my welcome after all this, I also appear weekly on the new Snowmobiler Television Show (MCTV, CHRO & CHEX - Sundays 5:30pm; CKCO Sundays 10am; CHFD Wednesdays 7pm). And no, I'm not always the raving maniac you'll see on the tube! To meet all of these obligations, I ride over 10,000 kilometres each season and trailer or travel about the equivalent. The national magazines require touring stories from all parts of Canada, so much of my winter schedule is planned around out -of -province riding. For instance, in the first three months of 1996, I was snowmobiling or en route for 75 of 89 days. Even as I write this column, I'm juggling five different touring destinations amidst other snowmobiling commitments to set a 1997 winter calendar. I try to ride early and late winter in British Columbia or the north of any province with snow. But weather can play havoc: last winter I had to cancel trips to Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and the Gaspe when Mother Nature turned off their snow abnormally. A mad scramble ensued trying to replace confirmed tours with suitable alternate destinations. Next April, when I finally haul my weary bones out of the saddle of my Ski -Doo Grand Touring SE and return it to Dunford's of Havelock for summerizing, it will only be to plunk myself down at my computer for the next six months to write 1997/98 stories and columns. If I can't be doing it, at least I'll be thinking about it - even if it is the middle of summer! On re -reading this debut column, I can understand anybody who still thinks I'm nuts, but I trust my snowmobiling credentials meet your approval. Until next time, happy trails and remember: Protect Our Environment - Stay On The Trail. For club or driver training info, contact the OFSC at (705) 739-7669.
