Two Exeter teams
win gold medals at
home tournament
Exeter Novice "Red" and the Exeter
Tween "A" teams placed first in their
divisions at the 32 team tourney
EXETER/HENSALL - The Exeter and District Ringette Associa-
tion hosted a 32 team tournament over the weekend with two out of
the seven teams representing Exeter winning gold medals.
The Exeter Novice "Red" and the Exeter Tween "A" teams cap-
tured gold medals on Sunday after placing first in a round robin
points tournament.
Coached by Doug Miners, Jodi Walsh and Tammy Preszcator, the
Tweens defeated Walkerton 7-4, tied Seaforth 5-5 before crushing
Owen Sound 10-1 in Exeter on Sunday.
Leeann Erb led Exeter with eight goals and three assists in the
three -game series, she was followed by Kerri Fulton with six goals
and three assists, Ashley Gooch with five goals and one assist, Tam-
my McCure had two goals and two as-
sists while Heather Morgan, Krista
Hodge, Nicole Zwaan and Brittney
Caldwell contributed assists.
Coach Miners said the entire team
played excellent maintaining good posi-
tion while setting up their plays very
well.
The second game was the highlight of
the series as the Tweens overcame a two
goal deficit to tie Seaforth at five. Min-
ers said the team remained patient and
composed allowing them to come from behind late in the game.
The Exeter Novice Red team won gold after sweeping all three of
their games in Hensall on Sunday. Exeter defeated London 11-5,
Stratford 5-3 and Mitchell 7-4 on their way to a first place finish.
Brittney Schroeder scored a total of nine goals and five assists,
closely followed by teammate Lea Mudge who scored seven goals
and two assists in the series. Emily Inson, Michelle Gaiser, Lauren
Taylor, Kristen Ferguson, Alecia Drummond Kelsey Pinder and
CSsAandra Morrissey also contributed points.
Coaches Ken Pinder and Lisa Taylor said all three games were
close and everyone on the team played well.
"This was a great experience and they had a lot of fun," said Pind-
er. "Playing three games in one dais exciting for them."
In otheilijourimmenuaction, on Saturday the Exeter Optimists Pe-
tite "`C" team lost all tlu-eeof their games in the tournament series as
did the Exeter Junior -team The Petite "A" team won one -of (heir --
three games beating Walkerton. On Sunday the Exeter Tween "C"
and the Exeter Novice White team lost all three games despite a sol-
id effort.
President, Julie Ritchie said the tournament was a success and all
of the home and visiting teams gained a lot of valuable playing ex-
perience. However, there was a minor glitch in Hensall on Sunday.
First the time clock stopped working and when they got it started
again the power failed casting the arena in darkness. Aside from put-
ting the tournament schedule off by one hour the technical problems
didn't phase the players.
"The kids thought it was hilarious and none of the teams minded,"
said Ritchie.
"This was a great
experience and
they hada lot of
fun. Playing three
games in one day
is exciting for
them."
Hawks lose wild shoot out
The Exeter Hawks suffered thier second loss of the season to
the North Middlesex Stars losing 10-8 in a high scoring game
PARKHILL - Nathan Burns re-,
turned to the Exeter Hawks' in fine'
fashion on Friday night scoring a
hat trick in front of a home crowd
during Exeter's 5-3 win over Sea -
forth on Friday night.
But despite notching five goals
the next night in Parkhill, the North'
Middlesex Stars outscored the,
Hawks 10-8 handing them their
second foss of the season.
Bill Hodge, John Rutten and Joey
MacDonald also found the mark
scoring one goal each against the
Stars, but the team's eight goal of :.
fort wasn't enough to overcome the
three goal deficit they sustained in
the second period.
The Hawks entered the game
with four starting players out of the
line-up with injuries, and others not
playing at 100 per cent; but with a
total of 18 goals being scored, it
was the goalies at both ends of the
rink having a bad night. Darren
Kints and Jason Glavin shared net -
minding duties against the Stars.
Things turned ugly early in the
game with 31 penalties balled tak-
ing almost one Nowt to complete the
first period. Head butch Dave Rev-
ington said the rough stuff worked
to the Star's advantage on their
home turf.
"They like to play aggressive,
that's their style and it suits their
small rink," he said.
Friday's effort was a close but
much more disciplined game with
Burns paving the way with his
three goals. Chris McDonald and
John Rutten also scored for Exeter
in what proved to be their fourth
consecutive win since they lost
their first game of the season to Lu -
can on Nov. 1.
Revington was disappointed with
the team's loss` on Saturday, but
happy to see Burns produce instant
results playing well with his old
teammates after joining , them late
in the season. He scored a total of
eight goals in his first two games
back and Revington doesn't expect
him to stop there.
"He's been a proven goal scorer
for our team over the last three
years and he's still doing it," he
said about Burns describing him as
an "impact player."'
A Junior "D" All-Star in 1995-
96, Burns scored 35 goals for the
Hawks last season and despite
missing 13 games with the Hawks
;this year, he looks as though he's
out for a repeat performance.
"We were looking for more of-
fense and he's going to do that for
us...he's already started," said Rev-
ington.
The Exeter Hawks defeated Seaforth 5-3 on Friday before. losing 10-8 In Parkhill
