F.E. Madill: losing three straight
EXETER - The South Huron District High School senior and jun-
ior boys volleyball teams hosted the Huron Championships on Tues-
day but failed to capture a conference title.
After regular league play the seniors ended up in
'second place and met Goderich in the semi-finals.
Goderich won all three games 8-15, 12-
15 and 10-15, eliminating the Panthers
from further play.
Coach Joe Jankowski said their serving
and blocking game was weak but other aspects
of the game were played well.
"Goderich was the better team that day; they
deserved to win," he said.
The juniors fared somewhat better, beating Gode-
rich in the semi-finals in a see -saw battle that took
four games to declare a winner.
The Panthers won the first match 15-10 but Gode-
rich came back to win the second by a close score of
13-15. The third match proved to be a nail -biter as both teams traded
side outs, taking the game into extra points. But in the end, the Pan-
thers emerged victorious, winning 17-15. They finished Goderich
off in the fourth match 15-8 to earn a berth in the finals against F.E.
Madil4
Their quest for a Huron Championship, however, was dashed
when Madill took all three matches 11-15, 6-15 and 10-15.
Coach Scott Halpenny said the semi-final game was well played,
marking steady performances from Paul Gregus, Rob DeVries and
Jamie Clarke, but in the finals they couldn't generate a consistent at-
tack.
"Madill managed to dig several balls in the match to frustrate us,"
said Halpenny.
The South Huron junior volleyball team is now preparing for the
Huron -Perth Championships in St Marys where they will meet Lis-
towel in the semi-finals.
South Huron Basketball
The South Huron District High School midget girls basketball
team hosted a tournament on Thursday competing against teams
from St. Anne's, Central Huron, Seaforth and Goderich.
Coached by Stacey Somerville the midget girls defeated Central
Huron with a convincing 52-9 win, but couldn't pull out a repeat
performance losing to St. Anne's 49-28 effectively ending their sea-
son.
St. Anne's went on to win the tournament.
The junior girls basketball team completed their regular season on
Nov. 4 with a 43-37 win over Clinton. Unfortunately, the win was
not enough to get them into the playoffs. Keriann O'Rourke netted
10 points, Arlene Inklahana had nine points, Jamie Beaburn and
Lisa Rooseboom added eight while Julia Geiger chipped in with six
points.
The senior girls basketball team competed in their conference
' playoffs at Seaforth on Friday. however, results were not known at

five goals in the second and third
periods.
Andy. Marshall led the Irish with
a hat trick and two assists while
teammate Josh Appleman scored

for one point after the game ended
in a 4-4 tie.
Steve Hudson scored a pair for
