Granton area students receive awards
Commencement was
held recently at Med-
way
edway High School.

GRANTON - Nora Wissel, Elsie
Dann and Muriel Lewis from Gran-
ton WI enjoyed a social 'afternoon
on November 5 sponsored by
Clandeboye Womens Institute at
St. James parish hall, Clandeboye.
The commencement was held at
Medway High School on Novem-
ber 1 when several from the Gran-
ton area received diplomas and
awards. Grade 12 graduates were
Susan Bryan, Lisa Humphrey, Gary
Hoar and Chris Mcllhargey. OAC
diploma graduates were Ben Harl-
ton, Suzanne Fox and Cheryl Fras-
er.
Chris Mcllhargey received the
WC, Frank Award, the Donald
John McKenzie Memorial Award,
and the award for Technological
Studies in year four. Ben Harlton
received Athletic and Academic
M's.
Granton 4 H Club
On November 6 the Granton 4 H
Club gathered at the home of leader
Margaret Bryan to discuss photog-
raphy matters. After opening with .
the 4-H pledge, the roll call was an-
swered with the pictures with a spe-
cial effect.
Achievement night was discussed
and then more pictures were taken
with special effects and illusions.
After the meeting a snack provided
by Bryan was enjoyed by everyone.
Jodi Van Kasteren was the secre-
tary and reporter.
At the Granton United Church on
Sunday, Nov. 10 Donna Bowman -
Woodall led the service
Amelia Jameson and John Her-
bert read the names on the honour
roll. The choir sang 'Abide with
me'.
At St. Pauls Anglican Church,
Kirkton, Rev. Glenda Meakin's
message was that God requires jus-
tice and righteousness and Chris-
tians should try to be a light in the
world.
The lessons were read by Mau-
reen Blackler, Robert Parkinson
and the minister.
Flowers in the church were from
the funeral of Ross Francis.

Pantherfest was.held during the weekend and it went over extreme y
well. Everyone who participated had a great time. The road hockey
winners were Lance Weiss and the All -Stars. Volleyball winners were
Pat Riley and Local Network. Congratulations to Chuck Gackstetter
of Hensall who was the lucky winner of a trampoline.
However, the overall winner of Panther Fun Fest was the quality of
the SHDHS school community. Thanks to everyone who participated.
Next week is Drug Awareness Week at the school. The Addiction
Research Foundation will be doing a survey with Grade 10 students,
the same students who participated in it last year. On Thursday, No-
vember 21, there will be a Drug Awareness Event in the main foyer at
lunch.
On Tuesday, November 19, the Drama Club will be hosting a Com-
edy Night at 7 p.m. in the small gym. Everyone is welcome to attend.
The Student Council Fun -O -Rama is being held on Thursday, No-
vember 21. The cost is $2 to get in. Because of it's great success last
year, we are holding it again this year. The $2 you pay will get you
tickets and you can buy as many tickets as you like. It will be lots of
fun, and there are lots of prizes to be won.

Unit one met at Cathie West -
man's place at noon on Thursday,
Nov. 7 commencing with lunch
served by Audrey Westman and the
hostess.
The meeting was opened with the
hymn 'Abide with me' and presi-
dent Doreen McRobert read a med-
itation 'Gentlest Knee' from the
chicken soup book no. I. Business
discussion included arrangements
for the next meeting, further plans
for the beef supper on Nov. 13, the
Carol sing on Dec. 1 and the
Christmas UCW General meeting
on Dec. 10th.
Audrey Westman convened the
program, reading a Remembrance
Day poem 'All I have seen' written
by her granddaughter Tara West -
man. She also read the Great Give-
away which was the story of a nat-
ural disaster. 'In Flanders Fields'
read by Amelia Jameson brought
the meeting to a close.
Unit 2 met on Monday evening,
Nov. 4 at the home of Pam Hayes.
They had a cookie exchange and
made plans for a chili luncheon on
Nov. 17 after church. The Decem-
ber meeting will take the form of a
dinner out.
Officers for the coming year will
be president Pam Hayes, secretary
and treasurer Nancy Mills, Social
Debbie Toll, and Sunshine Penny
McRobert.
Unit 3 met on Tuesday night,
Nov. 5 at Joan Hayden's home.
April Bryan introduced the guest
speaker David Whiting (her broth-
er) from Lucan who is a member of
the United Church London Confer-
ence Bluefield project in Nicara-
gua. He will be going with a group
to Bluefield for two weeks to re-
place the roof on a school. Blue-
field is a city of about 45,000 and
the school roof which was, de-
stroyed in about '88 will be re-
placed with a steel structure which
will be shipped in by road and wa-
ter, and finally assembled there.
Joan Hayden thanked the speaker.
Bryan then led the devotional and
gave the others readings to take
part. She concluded the program by
reading 'A child's view of retire.
ment'. The president Elizabeth Gar-
rett led the business discussion on
final plans for the beef supper and
catering for an upcoming banquet.
Refreshments were served by the
hostess.
Unit five met at Florence Bryan's
place on Tuesday afternoon Nov. 5
commencing with a dessert lunch.
Margaret Spence opened the meet-
ing with a November poem and
gave the meditation 'Who needs the
sparrow'. Psalm 87 was read and
the hymn 'God sees the little spar-
row fall' was read in unison.
The beef supper was discussed
and a Remembrance program fol-
lowed. Margaret Spence read about
a poor Irish lad, Ina Harlton about
'We can learn from the wild beasts'
and the story of John McCrae who
wrote 'In Flanders Fields' and Flor-
ence McRobert read 'Let not your
heart be troubled' and a Remem-
brance Day poem. Margaret con-
cluded with some humorous anec-
dotes from a church bulletin and
the meeting was closed with the
Lords prayer.
Penny sale
a success
EXETER - Precious Blood Mis-
sion CWL held another successful
annual Christmas Penny Sale. A
large crowd enjoyed the children's
fish pond, penny sale tables, silent
auctions and door prizes.
The quilt was won by Joan
McCann, Exeter, afghan, Wayne
Cole RR Exeter, Rebecca Meiding-
er, Exeter, all local winners.
A special thank you for the gen-
erous support of local businesses,
parish and patrons of the area.
