South Huron wins 10th
W.O.S.S.A. Championship
The South Huron District High School field hockey
team paved the way to another O.F.S.A.A. showdown
after defeating Medway in a dramatic come -from -
behind win at the W.O.S.S.A. playoffs in Parkhill.
PARKHILL - Off to O.F.S.A.A.!
The South Huron District High School field hockey
team clinched the W.O.S.S.A. (Western Ontario Sec-
ondary School Association) title on Friday earning an-
other berth to the Provincial Championships.
After winning their 15th Huron -Perth conference ti-
tle last week, the Panthers competed against six teams
from Huron -Penh, Middlesex and Oxford Elgin at the
annual tournament held in Parkhill to claim their 10th
consecutive W.O.S.S.A. championship.
The final game was South Huron's fiercest battle as
they squared off against a strong Medway team. Their
opponents started quickly and within three minutes
were up 1-0.
The score remained 1-0 in Medway's favor by the
first half, but the Panthers were steadily gaining mo-
mentum. At the 15th minute mark of the second half,
South Huron captain Toni DeJong took a shot that
beat the advancing goal keeper who came out to chal-
lenge her.
The goal lifted the team as they began to dominate
the game from that point on, but as the time wound -
down it looked as though the two teams were destined
for overtime.
With one minute remaining, South Huron was
awarded a penalty corner.
Cara Gardner collected the hit -out and dribbled
around a slew of defenders to force the ball past the
Medway goalie.
The dramatic goal proved to be the difference as
time ran out for Medway sending the South Huron
fans and supporters into a frenzy.
' The road to the final game was paved with the hard
work the team exhibited in the semi-finals against
Parkside.
Even though the Panthers dominated the game,
they could not score as their opponents flooded the
goal area with all 11 players.
With overtime looming, Gardner took a penalty
corner and worked her way to the net where Shawna
Rowe took the ball and pushed it over the goal line
for the game winner.
On Thursday the, Panthers defeated Medway 2-1 in
pool play with Gardner converting a penalty stroke
and Rowe adding the second goal. In the second
game South Huron defeated Central Elgin 6-0 on
goals by Rowe with three, Gardner with two and roo-
kie Lindsay Knight with one.
The Panthers will travel to Ridley College in St.
Catharines to compete in the O.F.S.A.A. (Ontario
Federation of Schools Athletic Association) cham-
pionships. Last year they qualified for the provincial
tournament winning bronze.
This time around the Panthers are ranked second in
this year's competition behind Waterloo Oxford.
Agincourt, Port Credit, King City, La Salle, St. Pius
X and O'Neill round out the top eight out of 16 teams
vying for the prestigious provincial title.
South Huron will play its first game on Thursday at
9 a.m. and its second game at 1:30 p.m. with action
continuing Friday morning.
South Huron has won four O.F.S.A.A. titles in the
last seven years including three consecutive cham-
pionships in 1994, '93 and '92. Coach Jim Workman
said the team is psyched -up, well practised and ready
to meet the challenge.

Irish take overtime
win in Lambeth
LAMBETH - Andy Marshall scored the winning goal in the dyi-
ing minutes of overtime to give the Lucan Irish a 4-3 win over
Lambeth on Sunday night.
The back and forth game was a close contest right from the open-
ing face-off as each team matched each other shot for shot.
Lucan's special teams provided them with their first two points as
Darryl Boshart pum1.ed in the first goal on a powerplay off a pass
from George Stephens. Roy Davis scored unassisted while short-
handed two minutes later.
Lambeth pulled up by one when they scored early in the third and
it looked as if they would clinch the win as the clock died down.
However, Lucan spoiled their plans when Chad Lamboum took a
pass from Stepher. and tied the score at three with only 1:32 left in
the game.
After a hard fought game like that most teams would have settled
for the one point on the road, but Lucan didn't quit and the hard.
work payed off when Marshall scored off an assist from Stephens
with only 1:32 left in the overtime period.
Lucan vs, North Middlesex
Sunday's win came off the heels of a disappointing loss against
the North Middlesex Stars on Friday.
Lucan lost 5-2 on their home ice in what head coach George Pratt
called their "worst game of the season."
Chad Greenlee and George Stephens scored for Lucan with Ryan
Carroll, Ryan Baynham 'and Adam Duskocy picking up the assists,
but the game was dominated by the Stars as they jumped to an early
lead scoring three goals in the first period finishing with a, goal in
the second and third.
"We were its flat as we could be. It was very disappointing." said
Pratt.
With a 5-2-1 wlrillotahle Award, the Irish are preparing for what
could be their two toughest games so far this season as they host the
Thamesford Trojans on Wednesday and travel to Exeter to play the
Hawks on Ptiday. Oath teams are leading their divisions and will

goals came on a powerplay. The
team executed well dominating all
