FALL/WINTER CAR CARE
Motor oil fact or friction

Motorists simply wanting to buy
a Titre of oil for their automobile
face a 'bewildering arrange of
choices; which brand, petroleum
based of synthetic, and of course
which viscosity. An oil's viscosity
is its thickness or ability to flow,
and is designated by those numbers
and letters often found on container
labels. Common viscosities to be
found on the self serve rack of ser-
vice stations are 5W30, 10W30 and
10W40. The Society of Automotive
Engineers (SAE) assign the grades
to specific oils, hence the label
markings SAE 5W30. For instance
a "5" grade oil is very thin, with the
fluidity of tap water. A very thick
oil, such as "40 or 50" grade has a
consistency of warm molasses.
Most modern automobile oils are
multigrades, literally two oils in
one package. The "5W" is 5W30
SAE designation is the oils winter
or 0 Celsius viscosity rating. In oth-
er words, this oil acts like a thin oil
at low temperatures. The "30" des-
ignation is the oils high tempera-
ture viscosity measured at 100 Cel-
sius. An SAE oil and a 5W30
multigrade should have similar
thickness at 100 celsius.
Modern automobile engines re-
quire multigrade oils. At low tem-
peratures a thin oil allows the en-
gine to crank more easily and is
easier to pump from the bottom of
the engine. This being most impor-
tant with the advancement of over-
head cam engines. Many owners
would be surprised to find out that
most engine wear occurs on the ini-
tial start-up. At 20 below zero a
heavy oil has the consistency of
mud and takes up to 60 seconds to
flow through the entire engine. On
the other hand, light oil doesn't of-
fer the high temperature protection
required to sustain severe use.
Al Roflings checks the cool-
ant strength of a vehicle at
Exeter Toyota Ltd. A 50:50 ra-
tio of water and antifreeze in
your radiator is suggested to
prevent your cooling system
from freezing.
Weather
warnings
Winter travel by automobile can
be serious business. Be prepared.
If you do n lot of winter driying
in isolated regions, you might
consider having a citizen's band
radio. *911 is a free call to police
and ambulance on your cellular
phone and *CAA is a free call for
Canadian Automobile Association
emergency road service (for CAA
members).
Heed The Warnings
Local weather offices of
Environment Canada issue
warnings of impending blizzards,
heavy snow, freezing rain or
drizzle, cold waves and winds.
Know The Hazards
Blizzard—The most perilous of
winter storms combining falling,
blowing, drifting snow, winds of 40
km/hour or more, visibility less
than 1 kilometre, temperatures less
than -10°C; duration, six hours or
more.
Heavy Snow—Ten centimetres
or more in 12 hours, or 15 cm or
more in 24 hours. Even less in
temperate climates.
Freezing rain or drizzle—An ice
storm coating roads, trees,
overhead wires, etc. with ice.
Cold Wave --A rapid fall in
temperature in a short period,
requiring greater than normal
protective measures.
Winds—The cause of blizzard
conditions, drifting, reduced
visibility and wind-chill effects.
Therefore the ideal oil would com-
bine the flowability properties of a
thin oil at cold temperatures and the
load-bearing capacities of a thicker
oil at high temperatures. In simple
terms multigrade oil.
Most of us have grown used to
filling our engines with 10W30 or
10W40. Now manufacturers and oil
companies are recommending
5W30. The reasons the Original
Equipment Manufacturers now rec-
ommend 5W30 is their desire to re-
duce internal engine friction for in-
creased fuel mileage. They simply
want to use the lighter oil to in-
crease their cars Transport Canada
fuel consumption figures. Produc-
tion costs of 5W30 is higher thus
cost of a single litre is higher than
than 10W30. Additives called vis-
cosity improves are added to 5W30
oil to gain its wide range of thick-
ness at various temperatures. These
additives tend to break down quick-
er adding the importance of regular
scheduled oil changes for longer en-
gine life. Recent major improve-
ments in oils may result in universal
use of 5W30, particularly as gov-
ernments pressure the auto manu-
facturers even better total "fleet"
fuel mileage.
The "Sarburst" has mysteriously
appeared on the container of engine
oil. The starburst symbol is the new
symbol consumers will look for
when they want to purchase engine
oils that meet automakers require-
ments. To
qualify for
the "Star -
burst" cer-
tification
mark, an
engine oil
must meet
SH stan-
dards, as well
as those for Energy Conserving II
classification. While the starburst
symbol reads "for gasoline engines"
a notice printed on the reverse side
of the container reveals the oils are
also suitable for diesel engines.
Autotnakers .contended that the
previous.6stem_of oil certification
lagged behind advances in vehicle
technology and contributed to vehi-
cle failure. Oil technology, they be-
lieved was not keeping pace with
engine technology. The American
Automobile Manufacturers Assc.
and American Petroleum Institute
eventually collaborated and the re-
sult is a new engine oil licensing
and certification system. Only
those oils that comply to this new
testing can display the "Starbust"
symbol.
A word about synthetics or artifi-
cial oils Synthetic oils are not re-
fined from crude oil, they are spe-
cifically engineered for high
performance engines. They can
give you superior low temp. fluidi-
ty, better high temp. protection and
a greater resistance to oxidation.
Some synthetics contain an addi-
tive that actually bonds to engine
surfaces, providing an extra layer
of protection. That layer is there
before you start your erigine,so
there is no metal to metal contact
even at start-up. Synthetic oils can
be mixed with conventional miner-
al oils, they are fully compatible
and they are recyclable. Synthetic
oils can be more expensive because
they are engineered to provide su-
perior performance and protection
compared to mineral oils. Whatev-
er your choice, the important thing
, to remember is check your owners
guide for suggested oil to be used
in your vehicle. Many manufactur-
ers do not discourage the use of
synthetic oils, although they are ad-
amant in the scheduled duration of
oil changes. Synthetic oil changes
can be really expensive when fol-
lowing the manu
facturers rec-
ommended oil
change inter-
vals.
