with Ernie Miatello
The real threat from the flu is the risk of
primary and secondary infections. Primary
infections can dense pneumonia or wear
down the body's resistance leaving It vul-
nerable to secondary infections. About
1000 Canadians (mostly seniors) die
each year from the flu.
Did you know that there are groups of people in the world in
whom blood pressure does not increase with age? These in-
clude Greenland Inuit, Congo pygmies, Cook Islanders and Aus-
tralian Aborigines. Hypertensionits an industrial disease. Rural,
underdeveloped peoples seem immune to it.
Who should NOT smoke? EVERYBODY, but especlally women
over 40 on birth control pill9 (increases risk of stroke and heart
disease); pregnant women (Increase risk of miscarriage); peo-
ple with children (Increases risk of respiratory infections, ear In-
fections, asthena, and allergies); people with diabetes or hyper-
tension (triples the risk of heart disease).
By the way, insulin-dependent diabetics who quit smoking may
find they need less insulin. Monitoring blood sugars is Impor-
tant for a while afterwards.
