Centre teaches healthy
ways to lose weight
EXETER - A weight loss centre
that focuses on how people eat is a
new approach to achieving long-
term success. The Exeter Herbal
Magic clinic, recently purchased
by Lori Gilliland, operates on the
basis of teaching meal planning
while offering motivation and sup-
port.
"Most people don't know how to
eat properly," said Gilliland.
She explained the program teach-
es people how to eat "normal
foods," such as proteins and
starches, in proper proportions. It
also includes herbal products such
as ginseng, which is considered to
increase energy and stamina, as
well as B vitamins and supple-
ments.
A wide range of herbal products
designed for people who suffer
from conditions such as arthritis
and premenstrural syndrome are
also sold at the centre. Many peo-
ple are particiularly interested in
shark cartilage, which some claim
has anti-inflammatory properties
and can be used as an alternative

treatment for cancer, arthritis, ec-
zema and even acne.
A daily menu plan is provided to
assist clients in making healthy
food choices. For example, lunch
may include a 5 oz. chicken breast,
1 cup of asparagus, 1/2 cup of ras-
berries and 3 oz. of non-fat yogurt.
The system also makes sugges-
tions about what flavoring aids,
such as herbs and spices, can be
used to enhance taste without add-
ing calories and fat.
The program is individualized
and based on the needs of the client
who sets their goal weight pro-
vided it doesn't drop below what is
considered a healthy level. Al-
though the program guarantees a
